De eerste cinema werd in Temse gestart in 1911. Het was de Gaumont van Ernest De Bock, drukker, die samen met zijn vader vóór Wereldoorlog I het kantonnale weekblad “De Telefoon” uitgaf. De Gaumont was gevestigd in de August Wautersstraat, waar zich in de jaren zestig de Bonanza-bar (*) bevond. Twee jaar later, in 1913, dook de eerste concurrent op. Louis Corthals, tot dan werkzaam in de drukkerij van Edward De Landtsheer, startte met “Het Goede Zaad”, eveneens in de August Wautersstraat. Na de Eerste Wereldoorlog veranderde de naam in Olympia. Toen de zaal, die dienst deed als bioscoop en als feestzaal, in 1921 grondig vernieuwd werd, werd de naam gewijzigd in Scala. Enkele maanden vóór de officiële opening van de Scala had Ernest De Bock zijn Gaumont in de August Wautersstraat verlaten en een nieuwe cinemazaal geopend in de Stationsstraat. Odeon was de naam van de nieuwe bioscoop (waar nu de gemeentelijke schouwburg staat). De Odeon van Ernest De Bock en de Scala van Louis Corthals leverden verscheidene jaren een felle concurrentiestrijd. Nadat Leon Corthals gedurende enkele jaren (1929-1936) ook de Odeon had gehuurd,verliet hij Temse (1936). Hij verkocht de Scala aan Ernest De Bock, vestigde zich in het Brusselse en werd de vennoot van zijn schoonzoon, Gaston Soudan, die zich inmiddels in de cinemawereld had ingewerkt. Op het hoogtepunt van zijn werkzaamheden baatte hij 35 bioscopen uit, waarvan er verscheidene zijn eigendom waren. Van die 35 werden er 5 door Leon Corthals (1880-1964) geleid. Als eigenaar van de Odeon en de Scala was Ernest De Bock van 1936 af heer en meester van het cinemagebeuren in Temse. In 1944 werd de Odeon totaal vernietigd door een vliegende bom. In 1945 liet hij op dezelfde plaats een nieuwe cinema bouwen: de Roxy. In datzelfde 1945 startte een gewezen medewerker van hem met een eigen cinema : Henri Van Daele begon in de Oeverstraat met de uitbating van British Palace. In 1964 gaf hij de uitbating over aan Maria De Rycke. De cinema's Roxy en Scala overleefden Ernest De Bock (1877-1963) slechts enkele jaren. In 1969 eindigde hun geschiedenis. De Roxy werd verkocht aan hetGemeentebestuur van Temse en kreeg de functie van gemeentelijke feestzaal. De eerste filmzaal ging in Temse van start in 1911: Gaumont van Ernest De Bock in de August Wautersstraat. Na W.O. I werd het pand afgekeurd als cinemazaal. Ernest De Bock bouwde een nieuwe bioscoop in de Stationsstraat: Odeon. Op 14/10/1944 viel daarop een vliegende bom - met catastrofale gevolgen: 9 mensen gedood, 14 zwaar gewond, 200 gekwetsten, 30 huizen verwoest, 24 onbewoonbaar, 175 beschadigd… In 1947 bouwde Ernest De Bock op dezelfde plaats een nieuwe bioscoop: Roxy, naar de plannen van Rik De Ryck. Roxywas vele jaren één van de meest voorkomende namen van theaters, cinema’s, feestzalen... ‘Roxy’ - vleivorm van Roxane - was de bijnaam van de Amerikaan Samuel Rothafel,één van de grote figuren van de Amerikaanse filmbusiness tussen 1910 en 1940. Hij beheerde de grote New Yorkse bioscoopcomplexen en introduceerde baanbrekende vernieuwingen in de filmindustrie. In 1927 opende hij het naar hem genoemde, wereldberoemde Roxy Theater in New York City, een luxueus cinemacomplex met 5.920 zitplaatsen. Het succes daarvan werkte aanstekelijk bij de naamgeving van feest- en andere zalen over de hele wereld (het Roxy Theater sloot zijn deuren in 1960 en werd gesloopt voor de uitbreiding van het Taft hotel en de bouw van een kantorencomplex). In Temse was de Roxy de belangrijkste en mooiste van de 3 cinema’s
