Maria-Germana verliet als 18-jarige haar ouderlijk huis. Haar moeder was niet tevreden met Maria's keuze voor Karel Van Landeghem. Zo trok Maria als jonge dame in bij haar kersverse man Karel en schoonmoeder Maria Armerotte. Maria werkte als fabriekswerkster "T'kloddeke" in de Kasteelstraat in Temse toen ze huwde. Pas nadien vond het koppel een eigen stek in de fonteinstraat.
