 Carolus Ludovicus werd in 1834 geboren als zoon van de alleenstaande moeder Sophia van Caer. Wanneer Carolus Ludovicus zo’n drie jaar oud is, huwde zijn moeder met dagloner Jan-Baptist Bijl. Hij herkende Carolus Ludovicus als zijn eigen zoon. Het gezin trok naar de Barelstraat nr. 7bis (1846) . Carolus Ludovicus is nét geen twintig jaar oud wanneer hij op 13 juli 1854 richting Schelle trok (wijk A nr. 108). Daar ging Carolus-Ludovicus twee jaar en half aan de slag als knecht bij de brouwerij Wachters. De eigenaars van de brouwerij waren Petrus Josephus Wachters en Rosalia Vergauwen. Zij wierven heel wat werklieden van de regio Bornem & Puurs aan. Op 13 jul 1857, keerde Carolus-Ludovicus terug voor enkele maanden terug naar zijn ouderlijke woning in de Barelstraat. Maar vier maand later, op 4 jun 1857, trok hij opnieuw naar de Brouwerij in Schelle. Daar bleef hij tot 3 maart 1859.


 


Op diezelfde dag beviel zijn vriendin Isabella Kerremans, die werkte als spinster,van hun zoontje Franciscus. Vermits het koppel nog niet gehuwd was, kreeg het kind de naam van de moeder. Carolus-Ludovicus gaat dan ook opnieuw wonen in zijn ouderlijke woning in de Barelstraat.
