Veel mensen in Koksijde kennen Marcel niet alleen als fotograaf, maar ook als de meester-kleermaker van de vroegere winkel ‘English Taylor’ in de Zeelaan. Daron Mertens Maandag 16 januari 2023 om 17:33 Marcel De Meirleir werd geboren op 25 november 1922 in Temse als zoon van Isidoor De Meirleir en Anna Daelman. Vader Isidoor was metaalbewerker en moeder Anna had een winkeltje in huishoudelijk textiel. Omdat er in volle oorlogstijd weinig werkaanbod was, ging hij in de leer bij een zelfstandig kleermaker. In 1943 dreigde de deportatie naar Duitsland, maar Marcel ontsnapte omdat hij een werkcontract versierde bij de rijkswacht in Antwerpen. Op 20 juni 1944 trouwde hij met Bertha Vandamme (100) uit De Panne. Na de oorlog zwaaide hij af als rijkswacht en startte met een eigen kleermakerszaak. Niet veel later werd de lokroep van de zee te sterk. Het koppel verhuisde, kleermakersatelier inbegrepen, naar de Middenlaan in Koksijde. In 1955 week kleermakerszaak English Taylor uit naar de Zeelaan. De exotisch klinkende naam van de winkel moest inwoners en toeristen verleiden. 78 jaar getrouwd Marcel De Meirleir is in binnen- en buitenland een autoriteit is op het vlak van fotografie. Hij behaalde zowel nationale als internationale prijzen. Onlangs liep er zelfs een expo over zijn werk in de Keunekapel. Hij schreef ook enkele boeken: Punt Omega en een prachtig fotoboek met foto’s die worden geflankeerd met gedichten van goede vriend Fernand Florizoone. Het koppel kreeg drie kinderen: Rudi, Nicole en Tania. Die schonken hen zes kleinkinderen en acht achterkleinkinderen. Bertha en Marcel vierden vorig jaar nog hun 78ste huwelijksverjaardag.
