In de zomer van 1818 werd Joannes-Baptist Van Gucht in Bornem geboren als zoon van de arbeiders Jozef Van Gucht en Joanna Maria Boeykens. Wanneer Joannes-Baptistelf jaar oud was, overleed zijn moeder. Joannes-Baptist zelf ging aan de slag als handwerker. In 1837 moest Joannes-Baptist voldoen aan zijn nationale militie. Hij trok nummer 19. Echter werd Joannes-Baptist voor één jaar vrijgesteld om te dienen als soldaat, vermits hij al twee broers had die dienstplichtig waren. Eén jaar later, in 1838, werd hij voor goed vrijgesteld vermits één van zijn broers tijdens de dienstplicht overleden was en de andere broer zijn diensttermijn had volbracht.
Tijdens de nationale militie werd Joannes-Baptist opgemeten. Hij was 1,620 meter groot. Joannes-Baptist werkte net zoals zijn vader Jozef als handwerker. In 1844 huwde hij met de twee jaar oudere dienstmeid Carolina Coeck. Carolina was een bastaard kind, haar vader was dus niet gekend, hierdoor kreeg ze de achternaam van haar ongehuwde moeder, Catharina Coeck. Zowel Joannes-Baptist als zijn vrouw Caroline waren ongeletterd, samen trokken ze naar den Boskant 78bis. Daar woonde het gezin naast (schoon)moeder Catharina Coeck.
Joannes Baptist en Carolina kregen in januari 1845 hun eerste dochter, Anna Catharina. Twee jaar later volgde opnieuw een dochter Francisca. Na amper vier jaar huwelijk sloeg het noodlot toe, Caroline Coeck overleed in haar woning op 8 aug 1848. Ze liet op dat moment haar man en twee kinderen achter. De tien jaar die daarop volgden, bleef Joannes-Baptist van Gucht over als alleenstaande vader. Maar wanneer in 1858 zijn twee dochters beginnen te puberen, hertrouwde Joannes-Baptist met de veertien jaar jongere Constantia Polfliet. Het koppel kreeg maar liefst elf kinderen. In 1863 overleed zijn oudste dochter (uit zijn allereerste huwelijk) op op 18-jarige leeftijd.


Wanneer Joannes Baptist sterft, zal zijn vrouw Constantia Polfiet nog hertrouwen met Joseph Blommaert
