Dominicus Meert werd geboren in oktober 1821 in het dorp Bazel als zoon van arbeiders Joannes-Baptist Meert, afkomstig uit Liezele (Puurs), en Sophia Duerinck. Kort na zijn geboorte verdween zijn vader Dominicus spoorloos in Bazel en werd nooit teruggevonden. Na het overlijden van Joannes-Baptist zette moeder Sophia haar werk voort als landbouwster. In tegenstelling tot zijn vader leerde Dominicus nooit zijn eigen naam schrijven.


In 1840 nam Dominicus deel aan de Nationale Militieloting, waar hij het nummer “40” trok. Dit betekende zijn inlijving bij het 8ste Regiment Linie. Vier jaar later, op 23 januari 1844, werd hij omwille van lichamelijke gebreken ontslagen uit de dienst en gerepatrieerd. Hij ging aan de slag als dienstknecht en verliet Bazel om zich in Temse te vestigen.


Op 20 januari 1852 trad Dominicus in het huwelijk met Seraphine Gillis, ook bekend als Gullens. Seraphine, dochter van Pieter-Jan en Theresia Vergauwen, was al weduwe en had vier kinderen uit haar eerste huwelijk met blokmaker Pieter Meersman, die in 1848 in Temse overleed.


Na hun huwelijk vestigde het koppel zich in de Blindstraat, waar ze minstens tussen 1852 en 1864 verbleven. In die periode werden vijf kinderen geboren: Pauline (1852), Jozef (1854), Frans (1856), Marie-Therese (1857) en Sophie (1858). Dominicus werkte al die jaren als dagloner en landbouwer.


Op 9 maart 1864 overleed Dominicus op 42-jarige leeftijd in zijn woning in de Blindstraat. Zijn stiefzoon Carolus Meersman, die eveneens in de Blindstraat woonde, deed aangifte van het overlijden. Vier jaar later, op 12 februari 1868, hertrouwde zijn weduwe Seraphine Gillis met dagloner Carolus Meirsman. Hij was afkomstig uit Kruibeke maar woonde in Bazel.


Twaalf jaar na Dominicus' overlijden, op 20 juni 1877, trouwde zijn oudste dochter Paulina Meert met dagloner en landbouwer Aloïs Raemdonck. Het koppel vestigde zich in Huis ten Halve in Tielrode.


In 1884 overleed Seraphine Gillis op 70-jarige leeftijd in de Blindstraat te Temse.
