De naam "Groüp" is volgens de Vlaamse parochieregisters afkomstig uit de omgeving van Turijn, Italië. Het kan een Italiaans-afgeleide naam zijn van "Groppi","Groppo" of zelfs een Turks-afgeleide van Gurup. De eerste keren dat de naam opduikt in Vlaanderen staat het geschreven als "Grüop". Zijn nageslacht krijgt het lidwoord "De" toegevoegd, als in "Ik ben een zoon van de Group". Joannis Gruop zou rond 1683 (ca. 80 jaar bij overlijden) in Turijn,Italië geboren zijn. Tussen 1640 en 1707 was de stad Turijn echter ons Frans bewind. Joannis Gruop kwam naar Vlaanderen en was daar sinds 28 april 1716 poorter te Tielt, huwde in Menen en werd meester pruikenmaker in Sint-Niklaas. Hij woonde in de Ankerstraat te Sint-Niklaas, waar hij in 1763 overleed. Joannis nageslacht zette het werk als pruikenmaker verder. Zoon Nicolas en kleinzoon Jean Francois (de zoon van Frans Antoine) werden dus eveneens pruikenmaker.


Op 8 april  1774 krijgt zijn kleinzoon "Joannes De Group" (zoon van Nicolais) een paspoort verleend (Te Sint-Niklaas, 241,https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSRK-M35R-B?i=240&cat=433535).


In 1808 schrijft kleinzoon Bernardus Josephus zijn naam als "De Grop", en diensnageslacht Petrus Josephus(°1787) schrijft dan weer "De Groüp".
