Notes about Simon "Simon" Groot

Zij hebben gewoond o.a. 1883-1894 aan de Grote Sloot, westzijde, hoeve Rust Roest. In 1896 te Schagerbrug en in 1898 aan de Grote Sloot. De hier genoemde jaartallen komen uit officiële stukken en het is goed mogelijk dat men telkens dezelfde plaats - in dit geval hoeve Rust Roest - aangeeft. Een andere versie is aangereikt door een kleindochter van Simon Groot: Simon Groot liet in 1878 de boerderij Rust Roest bouwen en met het bijbehorende land kostte dat fl.30.000,=. Na de door van schoonvader Stendert de Wit, kocht Simon Groot ook zijn boerderij. Deze boerderij lag aan de overkant van de Grote Sloot en droeg de naam Maria Hoeve. Stendert de Wit bleek tevens de eigenaar te zijn van hotel-café Het Zijper Wapen ook wel De Koepel genoemd.
Simon Groot en zijn zwager Dirk Kroon hebben het hotel-café samen gekocht en verhuurd aan zwager Arie Bruin. Volgens het verhaal leefde Arie Bruin op te grote voet, betaalde zelden de huuren zou in gijzeling worden gezet. Hij, Arie Bruin, liet het echter niet zo ver komen door de caféinventaris 's nachts op een schuit te laden en te vertrekken naar Haarlem waar hij opnieuw begon als herbergier. Of dit alles op waarheid berust is vooralsnog niet te achterhalen. Het komt in ieder geval niet overeen met de versie opgenomen bij Arie Bruin (getrouwd met Alida - Aaltje - de Wit).
