Gerard is geboren in 'het Land van Ravestein', waaronder ook de gronden van de huidige gemeente Zeeland vielen. Vandaar het sterke vermoeden dat hij geboren is in de omgeving van Zeeland.

Hij was betrokken bij vele legale zaken in de Meierij van Den Bosch onder de naam Zelandere. In de periode 1259-1263 is hij bekend als borg voor de Abdij van Saint-Trond (Sint-Truiden?), belast met de waarborging van de rechten van de Abdij te Babyloniënbroek-Dussen.
