    VOGELVANGER – vogels werden gelokt met lijm
    Al in de oudheid bestond er een markt voor vogelveren voor de sier, vogels om in chique gerechten te verwerken en zangvogels voor vermaak. Vogelvangers hadden genoeg te doen, en bij hun werk gebruikten ze meestal lijm.

    De Romeinse dichter Ovidius (43 v.Chr.-18 n.Chr.) wond zich op over de methode:
    'Bedrieg die vogels toch niet met een lijmstok!'

    Ondanks het protest van Ovidius werden ook in de middeleeuwen vogels gevangen met lijm van bessen van de maretak. Die werd op takken gesmeerd die in lage struiken werden gestoken. De vogels werden gelokt door soortgenoten in kooitjes.
