    He was born April 7, 1917 on Backhaus Road in his grandfather's rock house in Bandera County near Pipe Creek, Texas. He was the eldest son of Julius Backhaus and Minnie DeKunder. He is preceded in death by his parents and beloved wife Martha Hulda Schaefer.

    Survivors include brother, Charles Herbert Backhaus and wife Marilyn; sister, Adeleen Dumas; and daughter Kay Backhaus. He is also survived by his son, Tim Backhaus and wife, Jan, grandsons Brent and David Backhaus, and two step-great-grandsons, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

    Emil was a loving and caring man and we were truly blessed to have had him in our lives. He will be missed and will remain forever in our hearts.

    Funeral services will be held at Goetz Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, March 31 at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at San Geronimo Cemetery.
