Mijn voorvader Hilbert de Wit (geboren te Zwartsluis in 1790, overleden te Bergen op Zoom in 1848), betovergrootvader van mijn oma Truus Caenen-Menten. Hilbert was pontonnier en maakte de beroemde veldtocht naar Rusland in 1812 mee, hielp mee aan de bouw van de bruggen over de Berezina (waardoor de keizer naar het Westen kon ontsnappen, op de hielen gezeten door de troepen van de Russische tsaar), en wist alle verschrikkingen te overleven. In 1814 zou hij terugkeren in het recent tot stand gekomen Soeverein vorstendom der Verenigde Nederlanden. In 1818 trouwde hij met Elisabeth Tans, een bakkersdochter van de Brusselsestraat in Maastricht.
