    in 1853 wordt Jan vanuit Alkmaar naar het bedelaarsgesticht in Ommerschans gestuurd. Na zijn ontslag volgt in 1855 opnieuw opname in de 'bedelaarskolonie'. En daar blijft het niet bij. Tussen 1853 en zijn dood in Veenhuizen in 1885 wordt hij tenminste 11 keer overgebracht naar Ommerschans en/of Veenhuizen. Dat gebeurt vanuit Alkmaar, Utrecht, Leeuwarden Sneek, Assen en Amsterdam. Dit wijst erop dat Jan een zwervend bestaan leefde. Soms weet hij zich na ontslag een paar jaar op de been te houden, maar soms ook zit tussen zijn ontslag en hernieuwde opname slechts 2 weken.
