Notes about Dirk Hudig

Hudig [L.Jzn.], Dirk, directeur van de Koninklijke Nederlandsche Stoombootmaatschappij (KNSM) te Amsterdam (Rotterdam 13-10-1876 - Amsterdam 22-4-1973). Zoon van Louis Jacob Hudig, directeur van de Gemeentelijke Handelsinrichtingen te Rotterdam, en Johanna Elizabeth van Vollenhoven. Gehuwd op 24-3-1910 met Anna Rotgans. Uit dit huwelijk werden 3 zoons geboren.
Dirk Hudig groeide op in een milieu dat nauw was verbonden met de scheepvaart. Zijn vader was directeur van een van de voorlopers van het Gemeentelijk Havenbedrijf in Rotterdam. Het gezin woonde te midden van de havens, en verschillende familieleden waren cargadoor en/ of reder. Voor Hudig lag derhalve een carrière in de scheepvaart voor de hand.
Na de middelbare school (het instituut-Prins, een kostschool in Oirschot en later in Haarlem, waar onderwijs qua niveau vergelijkbaar met HBS werd verzorgd en ook handelsonderwijs werd gegeven) volgde Hudig, zoals in die tijd gebruikelijk, een verdere opleiding in de praktijk van het bedrijf. Hij begon onderaan de ladder en was achtereenvolgens jongste bediende bij de cargadoors Hudig & Blokhuyzen (1894- 1897), volontair bij een cargadoor in Hamburg (1897) en voor de reders en cargadoors Hudig & Pieters werkzaam in Engeland (1897-1899) en Rotterdam. In 1900 werd Hudig chef van het Amsterdamse filiaal van Hudig & Pieters. Hij kwam in Amsterdam in contact met Ernst Heldring, een van de belangrijkste Amsterdamse reders. Heldring (directeur van de KNSM) bezorgde hem eerst een functie als assistent van de hoofdagent van de Java-China-Japanlijn in Hong Kong (1904- 1907) en daarna als directiesecretaris van de KNSM. In 1916 werd hij adjunct-directeur, en van 1917 tot 1949 was Hudig directeur van de KNSM.
