NOTE: Ferdinand I (ca. 1016 - León 27 dec. 1065), koning van Castilië van 1035tot 1065, was de tweede zoon van Sancho III van Navarra. Ferdinand was deeerste die zich koning van Castilië noemde. Toen Bermudez III, koning vanLeón, hem aanviel, versloeg hij deze en maakte zich meester van diensrijk (León en Galicië), dat aan zijn gemalin Sancha, zuster van Bermudez,in erfbezit werd toegewezen (1037). Hij veroverde Coimbra op de Moren(1064), bracht de Moorse koning van Toledo de nederlaag toe en maaktezowel hem als de koning van Zaragoza schatplichtig. Hij versloeg zijnbroer Garcia IV, koning van Navarra, in 1054 bij Burgos (de laatstesneuvelde hier). Bij zijn dood verdeelde Ferdinand het rijk onder zijndrie zonen, zodat aan Sancho (II) Castilië, aan Alfons (VI) León enAsturië en aan Garcia Galicië en het noordelijke deel van hettegenwoordige Portugal ten deel vielen."Ferdinand [Castilië en León]", Encarta(R) 98 Encyclopedie Winkler PrinsEditie.
