KAREL I (eind maart 1226 - Foggia 7 jan. 1285), uit het Huis Anjou, waseen
2 CONC broer van koning Lodewijk IX van Frankrijk. Hij zocht eerst fortuinin diverse gebieden, o.m. in de Nederlanden, waar hij tijdelijkHenegouwen kon
2 CONC verwerven, dat hij echter in 1256 aan de Avesnes moestafstaan. In 1265 kreeg hij het koninkrijk Napels en Sicilië in leen vanpaus
2 CONC Clemens IV; hij versloeg zijn tegenstanders Manfred (1266) enKonradin en liet deze laatste onthoofden (1268). Hij breidde zijn
2 CONC machtaanzienlijk uit in Italië en op de Balkan, zodat hij eenMiddellandse-Zeemacht werd die het Huis van Aragón bedreigde. Met ditrijk brak
2 CONC dan ook strijd uit, gepaard met opstanden in Italië (o.m. deSiciliaanse vespers, 1282). Ten slotte werd Karel verslagen en gingSicilië voor
2 CONC het Huis Anjou verloren.
