ALFONS VII Oorspronkelijk Alfonso Ramirez (ca. 1104 - Fresneda aug.1157), koning van León en Castilië van 1126 tot 1157, zoon van Raymondvan Bourgondië en kleinzoon van Alfons VI, wiens keizerstitel hij in 1135overnam. Hij regeerde sedert 1119 in Galicië. Zijn jeugd werd vertroebelddoor de strijd tussen zijn moeder Urraca en haar tweede gemaal, Alfons Ivan Aragón, om de heerschappij over Castilië en León. Eerst bij de doodvan Urraca (1126) liet zijn stiefvader zijn aanspraken varen. ZijnveroveringC van Calatrava en Almería (1147) en andere overwinningenvergrootten wel zijn prestige, maar droegen weinig bij tot de verdereuitbreiding van het grondgebied. In 1157 verloor hij echter Almería, enCórdoba kon hij slechts drie jaar bezetten. Toen in 1146 de invasie vande Almohaden begon, sloot hij zich bij de Almoraviden aan om deAlmohadische expansie in Zuid-Spanje tegen te houden. Ondanks het gezagdat aan de keizerstitel kleefde, kon Alfons de tendensen naar autonomieniet tegenhouden en niet beletten dat Portugal zich in 1140 onafhankelijkverklaarde.
