L'abbé Jean-François Deblaye (1816-1884) est sans doute autant archéologue qu'historien. Chargé par Monseigneur Caverot d'inventorier les reliques du diocèse, il s'en fait une spécialité. Il constitue une importante bibliothèque que l'abbé Charles Chapelier rachète après son décès.
Deblaye est Membre de la Société d'Archéologie Lorraine, correspondant de la Société d'Emulation des Vosges et de l'Académie de Stanislas. Toutefois, son caractère difficile et sa plume acerbe lui valent quelques inimitiés dans les milieux ecclésiastiques et à la Société d'Archéologie Lorraine. Sa correspondance en est le reflet édifiant.
Jean François DEBLAYE. RO : né le 4 octobre 1816 à Velotte (Vosges). Ordonné le 5 juin
1841 à St Dié. Après ordination : vicaire à Charmes. Puis vicaire à Neufchâteau (paroisse St
Nicolas). 27 décembre 1845 : curé à Hymont. 8 février 1850 : curé à Ste Hélène. 10 novembre
1854 : admis dans le diocèse, mais non incorporé. 17 novembre 1854 : curé à Dommartin-lès-
Toul. 15 juin 1861 : curé à Imling. 1er octobre 1863 : retiré à Lunéville. A quitté le diocèse en
1868 pour retour au diocèse de St Dié. Semaine Religieuse 1884 : de 1873 à 1876 administre
la paroisse d’Auzainvilliers. Retiré à Poussay où il est décédé le 19 février 1884. Membre de
la Société archéologique et numismatique, de la Société d’Emulation. Auteur de plusieurs
ouvrages notamment sur les reliques (saint Hydulphe à Moyenmoutier, saint Siméon premier
évêque de Metz, sainte Menne, de Toul), d’articles critiques et polémiques dans l’Impartial
des Vosges.
