n. Nancy, 13 septembre 1802, d. 1873.
Élève de l'école des Beaux-Arts et d'Achille Leclère, il entre dans l'administration du département de la Meurthe en 1824, devient architecte du département en 1845. Il est, en même temps, architecte des édifices diocésains de Nancy et de l'asile d'aliénés de Maréville. Après avoir été démissionnaire pour des raisons de santé entre 1846 et 1848, il est confirmé dans son poste d'architecte diocésain à Nancy en 1848 et nommé à Saint-Dié. Il est encore en fonction en 1866 lorsqu'il est fait chevalier de la légion d'honneur.
Viollet-le-Duc écrit à son sujet (compte-rendu du personnel 1853) : "M. Chatelain est un architecte capable, parfaitement au fait des travaux et qui a acquis une longue expérience, jouissant à Nancy d'une excellente renommée bien méritée" , et encore : "J'ai déjà eu l'honneur de parler de M. Chatelain, les travaux dont cet architecte est chargé à Nancy ne lui permettent de consacrer à Saint-Dié le temps nécessaire aux édifices diocésains et lui-même demande tout le premier son remplacement".
Chatelain a construit la maison de correction de Nancy (1825-1835), reconstruit la caserne de gendarmerie de Nancy (1827-1838), réalisé les décors des fêtes des cérémonies expiatoires des princes de Lorraine (1828), de celles célébrant le passage à Nancy de Charles X (1828) et de Louis-Philippe (1831) ; il a également construit plusieurs casernes de gendarmerie, agrandi le séminaire de Nancy, participé à la restauration du palais ducal de la même ville. Entré à la compagnie des chemins de fer de l'Est, il a construit à Nancy la gare des voyageurs et celle des marchandises (1853-1856).
En 1824, il est membre et secrétaire de la commission départementale des bâtiments civils. À partir de 1848, il est membre du conseil municipal et notamment de 1849 à 1852, adjoint au maire de Nancy.
