Canistota - Susan J. Shumaker, age 53, of Canistota, died Tuesday, September 17, 2002 at Sioux Valley Hospital, Sioux Falls.
Susan J. Tiedeman was born August 30, 1949 in Hull, Iowa. She grew up on a farm near Hull and graduated from Boyden-Hull High School in 1967. She went on to earn her B.A. from Augustana College. On January 30, 1971 she married Dale Shumaker in Hull, Iowa. They moved to Sherman, SD in 1974 and began farming. In 1979 they moved to a farm near Canistota where she lived the rest of her life.
She graduated from North American Baptist Seminary in 1995 with a Masters Degree in Counseling. She was a chaplain at the Canistota Good Samaritan Center and was Director of New Ministries at the United Church of Canistota.
Survivors include: her husband of Canistota; five children, Jennifer Shumaker-Parry and husband Jon of Seattle, WA, Jason of Canistota, Stefanie of Princeton, NJ, Benjamin of Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri, and Stacy of Vermillion; one granddaughter, Josephine Parry; and two brothers, Kenneth Tiedeman and wife Carol of Hull, Iowa and Harlan Tiedeman and wife Dorothy of Beresford.
Funeral services will be Saturday, September 21, 2002 at 10:30 AM in the United Church of Canistota. Burial will be in the Canistota Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2:00 PM Friday in the church with a prayer service to be held at 7:30 PM in the church.
