As a young man, John Smies was caught stealing from Billy Gold's store. As a punishment, he had to chop wood in the burg village square. He was so shamed by the experience, that he ran away from home and was never seen again.
However, years later, a bum asked to sleep in the barn on the Smies farm. Annie Smies brought him some supper and then left him for the night. During the night she wondered if that could be her John--she thought he reminded her of him in some way. So in the morning she went out to the barn to confront him. But she found that he had already gone, so the question remained unanswered. This according to Alice June VerVelde's oral history.
