Silver Beaver bestowed by Boys Scouts of America after years as scoutmaster and a many-term president of the Winnebago Council.
Called "Baba Pete" by his descendants.Pete was born in the town called Bruce, which no longer exists. Clarion was the nearest town. To put himself through college, he worked at varied jobs. He also had at least two scholarships for college, one an athletic scholarship from Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa (he was senior quarterback of the football team and played basketball) and another from the Masonic order. By the time of his death he had obtained a higher order in the Shriners. After college graduation, instead of fulfilling a contract to coach and teach at a high school in Iowa, he accepted a job with Skelly Oil Company as District Manager, covering Iowa and some other Midwest states, and was based in Davenport, Iowa. That is where he ran into Kay DALY again and they started dating. She had been a Cornell student when he was there and had become a Children's Librarian at the Davenport Public Library, living with her parents. They were married September 11, 1930 in the living room of her parents' home, an apartment house at 1111 Brady Street, then moved into an upstairs apartment. After many years with Skelly and eventually moving the family to Mason City, Iowa (after living in Cherokee and Algona, Iowa), he became the manager of the Skelly Oil bulk plant in Mason City (1940 census.) In about 1942 he bought the coal dealership next door to the bulk plant and called it Parks Fuel Company. By around 1953/4, he dissolved the coal business and accepted the University of Iowa position for Director of Housekeeping of the university hospitals and clinics in Iowa City, remaining until his retirement about 18 years later.
