Martha Ellis was born about 1792 in North Carolina. Her father was Jesse Davis who was born about 1766. In 1798 Benjamin moved to South Carolina with his mother and grandparents after the death of his father which occurred in 1791 when Benjamin was 3 years old. Benjamin's mother, Rutha, married John Murphy in 1803, when Benjamin was about 15. Benjamin Hudgins and Martha Ellis were married about 1809 in South Carolina. Benjamin and Martha may have moved to Georgia with his mother and step-father along with other members of his family. His brothers Philip and James lived in Georgia throughout their lives. Benjamin and Martha moved on to Alabama, having arrived there at least by May, 1814, when their son Elnathan was born. They lived for some time in Shelby County; the book "History of Methodism in Alabama and West Florida" refers to a deed for the Harpersville Methodist Church being made to five trustees, one being Benjamin Hudgins. The deed is dated June 16, 1830. It further states that "The persons whose names are given in this deed were all members of the Society at Bethehem, and were persons of stability and worth". By 1831 Benjamin and Martha had moved to Jackson County. Land records there show that they acquired 80 acres of land in October, 1831, and an additional 80 acres in January, 1837. Benjamin and Martha were the parents of 12 children: Mary (Polly) Hudgins, born in 1810; Delilah Hudgins, born in 1812 and who would marry Dillard Brooks; Elnathan Hudgins, born on May 16, 1814, and who would marry Sarah Proctor; Jesse Ellis Hudgins, born in 1816; Elizabeth Hudgins, born in 1819 and who would marry Israel Cox; John Wesley Hudgins, born in 1821; James M Hudgins, born in 1824 and who would marry Eliza Proctor; Benjamin Franklin Hudgins, born in July 1827 and who would marry Susan Proctor; Phillip Davis Hudgins, born in 1830 and who would marry Mary Ann Morehead; Anderson Pierce Hudgins, born in 1832; and Martha (or Matilda) Ann Hudgins, born in 1834 and who would marry Thomas Parks. Benjamin died on July 12, 1856, in Jackson County, where his will was entered in Will Book A, page 94, in August, 1856. He was 68. Martha died about 1861, also in Jackson County, at about the age of 69.
