[doddimp.FTW] [Brøderbund WFT Vol. 14, Ed. 1, Tree #0434, Date of Import: Apr 15, 2001] Joel Dodd and Lebitha Orr Joel Dodd was born about 1820, possibly in Lincoln County (later Marshall County), Tennessee, but more likely in Alabama before his parents moved to Tennessee. Joel states on the 1850 Lawrence County, Tennessee, census that he was born in Tennessee, however on the 1860 Crawford County, Missouri, census he gives Alabama as his birthplace. It is probable that Thomas and Catherine Dodd were his parents. There were four Dodd families listed on the 1820 Lincoln County, Tennessee, census to which Joel could have belonged. Those families were those of two sons of Jesse Dodd (Jesse Dodd, Jr, and Joel Dodd) and two sons of David Dodd (David Dodd, Jr and Thomas Dodd). One of the two sons of Jesse Dodd, Jesse Dodd Jr, does not appear on the 1830 census in Tennessee and is believed to have moved to Marion County, Alabama, in 1821 with his father and younger brother John Dodd. Revolutionary War pension records contain an affidavit in which Jesse Dodd states that he was moved from Lincoln County, Tennesse, to his present place on residence, Marion County, Alabama, with the assistance of his sons Jesse Dodd, Jr, and John Dodd. Jesse Dodd, Jr, is known to have later moved to Saline County, Arkansas, where he died sometime before 1870. Jesse's other son, Joel Dodd, remained in Lincoln (later Marshall) County until his death; however his seven heirs are known from land records which settled his estate after his death. A younger Joel Dodd is not among them. Of the two sons of David Dodd, it is known that David Dodd Jr had also moved to Alabama no later than the date of the 1830 Lauderdale census on which he appears. He also later moved to Saline County, Arkansas, where he died sometime after 1870. David Dodd's other son, Thomas Dodd, died in Lincoln County sometime before April 1822, as shown by Will Book "A". His widow, Catherine Dodd, remained in Lincoln County until at least after the 1830 census on which she appears. A comparison of the 1820 and 1830 census shows her to be still living in the same place in 1830 where she and Thomas had lived in 1820. She does not appear on the 1840 census. It is not known if she may have remarried in the interval between the 1830 and 1840 census but it is possible since she would have still have been in her early thirties at the time of the 1830 census. Thomas and Catherine Dodd were probably the parents of the younger Joel Dodd. Joel would have been no more than two years old at the time of his father's death. Lebitha Orr probably was born about 1824 in North Carolina and moved with her family to Marshall County sometime before 1840. The only Orr family listed on the 1840 Marshall County census having a daughter of Lebitha's age is the one headed by Sample Orr. He was only about 23 at the time. An elderly woman who could have been his widowed mother lived in the household. The household also contained several children including two girls between 10 and 15 years of age and one girl between 15 and 20 years old. These were probably his sisters; as indicated by census records Lebitha and Permelia Orr would have the correct age to be the two girls between 10 and 15 years old in 1840. Sample is shown on the 1850 Lawrence County census to have a son named Solon. One of Joel and Lebitha's sons was named Sample and the name Solon later appears in the family of William Dodd, another of their three sons. The maiden name of Sample's wife Patience was Houston; that name also appears in William Dodd's family as his son John Dodd's middle name. In addition to Lebitha, Sample Orr's family in 1840 contained another girl was probably the Permelia Orr who married a John Dodd in Marshall County in 1843. This John Dodd is probably the younger Joel Dodd's brother and Thomas and Catherine Dodd's son. Sample Orr and other apparently related members of the Orr family give their birthplace as North Carolina. Lebitha was probably also born there before moving to Tennessee at an early age. Joel and Lebitha were married in Marshall County on August 31, 1843, and moved to Lawrence County sometime before October, 1850, when the census was taken. Joel was shown on the census to be a farmer but owned no land at that time. Sample Orr and his family were also living in Lawrence County by then. Sample was a lawyer and a landowner. All of Joel and Lebitha's four children were born in Tennessee: Angeline, born about 1844; William, born November 9, 1846; John, born about 1849; and Sample, born in 1852. Joel and his family moved Tennessee to Missouri sometime after Sample was born, probably about 1854. Sample Orr and his family had moved to Greene County in Missouri no later than October of 1854 when county land records show his acquisition of property. By family knowledge, Lebitha Orr Dodd died during the move from Tennessee to Missouri. She would have been about 30 years old. Joel was remarried on August 5, 1855, to Elizabeth Plasters in Crawford County, Missouri. They appear on the 1860 Crawford County census along with Joel's four children. Elizabeth's age is given as 46. She appears to have been twice a widow prior to her marriage to Joel. Crawford County records show the marriage of Elizabeth Lofton to James Plasters on March 18, 1850. The county census made in November of that year lists James, age 41; Elizabeth, age 38; four Lofton children ranging in age from 3 to 13; and five Plasters children ranging in age from 5 to 16. Joel's cousin Jesse Dodd and his family were living in Crawford County near to Joel by the time of the 1860 census, Jesse having sold (in December of 1857) his interest in his inheritance from the elder Joel to George Dodd, his brother. Jesse's sister Sarah with her husband John Walls and her family were living adjacent to the Jesse Dodd family. She had sold her interest in the inheritance to George Dodd in January of 1856. Also living nearby were Telitha Orr as well as members of the Walls family. Only John Walls, a stonemason, was shown to be a landowner. No further record can presently be found of Joel Dodd. His daughter Angeline is shown on the 1870 census to be still in Crawford County, now living with Telitha Orr, who was probably her aunt and who would have been about the right age to have been an unmarried older sister from the 1840 Orr household. Jesse Dodd and his family are also still in Crawford County. It is possible that Joel Dodd with his family moved to near Springfield in Greene County sometime before his son William enlisted in the Union Army at that location on June 27, 1863, or he may have died before then in Crawford County with only his sons moving to Springfield. Sample Orr had lived in Springfield at least since 1854 and was elected probate judge in 1857. The book "History of Greene County" states that he was a strong supporter of the Union and an outspoken opponent of secession. It further states that in June of 1861 he was elected a major in the State Guard and was eager to "clean out" the secessionists who were organizing and training in parts of the county. William Dodd's obituary states that he lived near Springfield before he joined the army and may well have been influenced in his views by his uncle, Sample Orr. His brother, Sample Dodd, in all probability also lived there. After the Civil War the two brothers lived farther to the west in Jasper County. As noted above the time and place of Joel's death are not presently known and no record of him has been found after the 1860 Crawford County census.
