Louis settled at the Clinton River ca 1800 and had a general store of such articles as was demanded in that locality. In July Governor Hull divided the territory of Michigan into districts for Courts of Justice and Louis was appointed Justice of the Peace for the Huron District together with George Cottrell, John Marie Beaubien and Christian Clemens. In September 1805, Governor Hull as Commander in Chief ordered two regiments of infantry to be formed in the territory of Michigan and Louis was appointed Captain of the 1st regiment. In October, 1805 the militia of the battalion of four companies. Captain Louis Campau was appointed Major of this battalion.
