The 1911 Canada Census was officially conducted on June 1, 1911 in the nine provinces. Individuals were to be enumerated in their usual place of residence even though they may not have been at that residence on the night of the enumeration. The head of household was to be recorded first followed by the rest of the members of the household. The forms used for the territories was a simplified version of the regular schedule and enumerators assigned to the Yukon Territory and Northwest Territories were allowed to begin before June 1st.

In 1901 Canada consisted of the following provinces and territories: British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, the District of Keewatin, the Yukon Territory, and the Northwest Territories. The Northwest Territories was much larger than it is today; it was comprised of several districts—Alberta, Assiniboia, Athabasca, Franklin, Mackenzie, Saskatchewan, and Ungava.
