Rufus CORBIN, to whom, as much as to anyone else, the origin of this commemorative record of the CORBIN's is due, was a self-made man of the best type and one who brought true honor to the CORBIN name. He was left an orphan at the age fourteen, and was "bound out," according to the custom, until he should be twenty-one. Wishing an education, which his guardian was unwilling to allow him, he ran away and later had the papers transferred. He worked at the Springfield Armory for a time and then went to New York, where he worked days and attended night school taught by a Presbyterian minister. After attending the Hudson Academy one year, he began teaching at Philmont, N. Y., in 1853, where he found his wife. He taught at Nyack. soon after he went to New York and entered the employ of the third Ave. Railroad Co. as clerk. He continued in the employ of this company until his death, being for many years its cashier. The head of the company testified of him, "He was the most just man ever in our service.
He died of typhoid pneumonia, February. 12, 1898, and was buried at Philmont, N. Y.
He was a devoted member of the First collegiate Reformed Church at 121st St. and Third Ave., New York. The Church paper, at the time of his death, said of him:"
