"WILLIAM MELVIN CORBIN (Benjamin, David, Asahel, Benjamin, Jabez, Clement), b. May 13, 1835, at Union, Conn.; m. Josephine Walker, June 27, 1860. She was the dau. of Harvey and Julia A. (White) Walker and was b. at Union, March 30, 1841. Harvey Walker was a successful merchant and shoe manufacturer at the village of Mashapaug in Union, Conn., a most worthy and true Christian man.
William M. CORBIN received his education in the common and select schools of Union, and then went into business in 1853 with Walker, Sessions & Co. of Mashapaug. After the death of Mr. Walker in 1860, Mr. CORBIN became the head of the firm, until the business was discontinued in 1881. In addition to an active business life he took great interest in public affairs, and held many offices as selectman, representative in the legislature of 1868, state senator in 1875, deputy sheriff from 1862 to 1880, and sheriff of Tolland County from 1881 to 1884. He was a delegate to the Republican convention in Chicago that nominated James G. Blaine in 1884. He was a strong Republican and a leader in the party, both in town and state. He joined the Congregational Church at Union in 1859 and was a leading member of liberal contributor. In 1881 he took his family to Hartford for educational purposes, where they have since resided.
In 1884 his health became very poor from Bright's disease and for three years he was compelled to give up active business life. He found relief; however, and was called in 1887 to the presidency of the Savings Bank of Stafford in 1887 to the presidency of the Savings Bank of Stafford Springs, Connecticut, which was then in an embarrassed condition. He straightened out the affairs of the bank and helped to restore the confidence of the community in it. In July, 1888, he became cashier of the First National Bank of Stafford Springs, in which position he continued until his death. His high character and honorable business record did much to put these institutions on a sound and strong footing with the full confidence of the people. At his death both of these banks passed resolutions recognizing the value of his services. In 1888, with others, he organized the Central Woolen Co. of Stafford Springs, which was done a successful business.
Mr. CORBIN was always interested in the welfare of his native town of Union. In 1876 he took the leading part in arranging for a large and successful historical celebration and reunion of old families. In 1892-3 he worked in connection with the present writer, who did the literary work, to secure the completion and publication of "The History of Union, Connecticut,"a fine town history of about 500 pages, the material for which had been largely gathered by a native of the town, Rev. Charles Hammond of Monson, Mass. Mr. CORBIN took the financial responsibility for the work, raising a guarantee fund and looking after the sale of the book.
He died March 21, 1894, at his residence at 57 Willard St., Hartford, and was buried at Union. Mrs. CORBIN resides at 176 Collins St., Hartford."
