"...He was a blacksmith; enlisted in 1861; was wounded and discharged in 1863; was sheriff of Richland County, Wis., for eight years; removed to a farm at Windham, Cottonwood County, Minn., where he was postmaster five years, and d. in 1892. She d. there in 1881. A dau.., Maud. m. Fred Leonard, and lives at Grangeville, Idaho; another dau.., Ida. d. 1876."
According to the 1890 Veterans' Schedule, he enlisted in Co. F. 16th Wis. Inf. on 12 Dec 1861 and was discharged 1 Aug 1862. Thus his Civil War service lasted 6 months.
He is in the 1880 US Census in Windom with wife Maranda and daughter Maud. His wife is named in an Ancestry family tree as Miranda Sophia CORBIN.
Mr. McMurtrey may have had two wives, the one who died in 1887 and another whose obit is posted on Maranda's page who died in 1915.
