Rev. Harvey M. Lawson, Ph.B., B.D., "History and Genealogy of the Descendants of Clement Corbin of Muddy River (Brookline) Mass. and Woodstock, Conn.", 1905, p. 256 ELLEN LUCY KINNEY, "He was b. Feb 5,1865, the son of Oliver Gould and Nancy Maria (Nichols) Beard of Shelton. He graduated in 1887 from the Derby High School, in 1891 from Oberlin College, and in 1894 from the Hartford Theological Seminary. He was ordained as a foreign missionary at Huntington, Connecticut, Sep 11, 1894. On Sep 20th a "recognition service" was held at the Congregational Church at Putnam, of which Mrs. Beard was a member, and which has since assumed her support, to bid the young missionaries God-speed. They sailed October 27, 1894, as missionaries at the American Board to Foochow, China. Here, owing to the scarcity of laborers, Mr. Beard was put to work almost immediately, even before getting the language. He was chosen president of the theological seminary, and carried on the work of training native preachers. He also had charge of the evangelistic work in the Ponasing station, and made frequent tours, mostly on foot with coolies to carry his baggage. He was very successful in leading the churches to self-support, Mrs. Beard, in addition to the care of her family, carried on work among the women and in the churches, and helped in the multitudinous duties which come to a missionary family. after nearly nine years of successful service they returned on furlough, via Suez Canal, in 1903, arriving in New York April 25th. After spending a little over a year and a half in this country, during which time they were very active making missionary addresses, they returned to Foochow in December 1904. He is now engaged in general Y.M.C.A. work."
