QUAY 3 When my mother died in 1906, my dad placed us (four boys) in an orphanage. Some months later he rescued us from that "home" and placed us with aunts and uncloes. My mother's family, also named Mitchell took John and Joy. Dad placed Paul and me with his uncle John G. Mitchell, Edward C Mitchell's brother. At that time Uncle John was married to Carry Hegeman, his second wife. Uncle John had married when he was quite young and had one daughter, Anna, with that wife. Paule who was always restless, left aunt Carry and Uncle John's home when he was thirtheen. I left their home when I reached seventeen and lost all contact with those dearl old people and the Mitchell family. My dad, when I was living with Uncle John and Aunt Carry would visit me every few months. We lived on a farm 15 miles N.E. of St. Joe. QUAY 3 Homesteader Paul Mitchell was pilot, prospector: Paul A Mitchell, 87, who served under Gen. Billy Mitchell during Word War I, died July 2 in Anchorage Pioneer Home. He was born Aug 8, 1898, in Missouri, and when 9 years old went to an orphanage, where he and his brothers lived until they joined their uncle. During World War I, he served as a radio operator with an airplane crew, followed by employment with the CB&Q Railroad. He lost his job when the Depression arrived and went West where he worked in a Utah silver mine and later in a gold mine in Nevada and a copper mine in Arizona. A series of jobs followed from Texas to Michigan and New York to Seattle until he arrived in Alaska 41 years ago. He homesteaded near Eagle River and worked on the railroad and as a Bush pilot, amateur radio operator, grease monkey and prospector. Mr Mitchell always fought for the underdogs and in the late 1960s participated in a 30-mile Anchorage fund-raiser walk for polio. The funeral for Mr Mitchell begins a
