R. Jack Baas passed away at age 94 on September 6, 2014. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Jeanette Rylaarsdam Baas. He is survived by his children Marc (Belen) Baas of Arlington, VA, Myra (Ron) Smith of Palm Coast, FL, Curt (Debbie) Baas of Saugatuck, MI, and Cara (Rick) Brzezinski of Waco, TX; nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Norma (Bud) Kahler of Jenison, MI.
Jack was born and raised in Grand Rapids and graduated from Hope College in 1942. He was a highly decorated Navy pilot, flying over 50 missions in the South Pacific during World War II. He worked in management at American Seating Company and was an active member of Hope and Central Reformed Churches. Jack was a tireless volunteer, working with area service organizations, churches and schools.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 13, 2014 at Central Reformed Church with a luncheon following. Memorial contributions may be made to the Jeanette R. Baas Teacher in Residence Program at Central Reformed Church, 10 College Ave. NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49503.
