1880 Census, Richland Twp, Cowley, Kansas shows John as Single, age 40,as a farmer and living with his brother David Deffenbaugh and family.
In 1891, John was part of the Land Rush into Oklahoma and staked a claim of 160 acres located in Lincoln County and homesteaded the Northeast quarter of section 19, Twp 13, Range 6, filed on 3 Nov 1891. Cost was $14.00. John's nephew Christian Daniel, homesteaded a farm directly to the east, Northwest Quarter of Section 20, Twp.,13, and Range 6. Christian was not part of the land rush but after the run purchased the claim for $500.00. John lived there until he died on 21 July, 1917 and is buried in the Kellerby Cemetery, located about 2 milesfrom his farm. John never married. Ola Bon Fouquet, son of Dollie May Deffenbuagh Fouquet and his wife Charlotte, now live on the original farm of John Deffenbaugh.
