The last named was born in 1758 on his father's farm near Lewisburg. He farmed in the area until 1797; then came to the Tuscarora Valley and settled in Milford Township in Juniata County. He was a solider of the Revolution as well as an Indian scout.
On April 8, 1780, Leonard (Lenheart) enlisted in Captain Thomas Robinson's Northumberland Rangers. In 1780 when he was on a hunting and scouting expedition, he was surprised by Indians, wounded in the hand, and captured. He was held captive by the Indians for two years, and was reported adopted by an old Indian squaw. During that time he learned the Indian tongue and could speak the language with considerable fluency. At last he succeeded in making his escape and found his way through the almost impenetrable forest to his home. He lived a long and useful life. The valley in which he lived is now called "Groninger Valley."
Leonard Groninger was born about 1765 in Lewisburg, Lehigh , Pennsylvania. He was confirmed on 13 Apr 1783 in Lower Macungie, Lehigh Co, Pennsylvania. Maria Barbara May(13) was born on 18 Feb 1760 in Lewisburg, Union Co, Pennsylvania. She was baptized in 1769 in Zions Church, Windsor Twp, Berks Co, Pennsylvania. She died on 31 Oct 1859 in Juniata Co, Pennsylvania
BIOGRAPHICAL INFO:
LEONARD GRONINGER, of German descent, was born in Lewisburg, Union County. After farming for a short time in his native county, he removed to what is now Milford Township, Juniata County, where he purchased a large tract of-forest land belonging to the Moy estate most of which he cleared. After spending the greater part of his days in a log house, he erected a fine stone mansion, the first built, in that section of the state. He married Miss Moy [May], born at Lewisburg, Union County. They had these children: Jacob; Susannah (Mrs. John Wisehope [Wisehaupt]); Margaret (Mrs. John Hench); George; Henry; Mary Ann (Mrs. Jacob Kepner); Elizabeth (Mrs. James Woodward); and Catharine (Mrs. Martin Branx [Brandt]). Leonard Groninger was a Whig. He was a member of the Lutheran church. His death occurred in the year 1831; both he and his wife are interred in the Church Hill graveyard.
