Died, at 3:30 o'clock Saturday morning, October 30, 1915, at St. John's hospital, after a short illness from pneumonia and brochial trouble, Franz Bode, aged 69 years, 11 months and 12 days, of 501 Williams boulevard. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the family residence and at 2:30 o'clock at St. John's German Lutheran church, Rev. William Schulzke, the pastor, officiating. Interment will be made in Oak Ridge cemetery.
With the death of Franz Bode, the career of one of Springfield's most prominent citizens is ended. The last years of his life were passed in retirement, but for a number of years previous to 1893, his reputation was made in this community, as partner in the firm of Bode & Hemberger, undertakers. He was a former member of the Sangamon county board of supervisors.
Frank Bode, the son of Rev. and Mrs. Frederick Bode, was born on November 18, 1845, in the Province of Hanover, Germany. Tutored by his father, a Lutheran minister, until his tenth year, his first education out of the home was received at an institution near the Hartz mountains. His first work was as clerk, and later, traveling salesman for a hardware concern, at Einbeck, Magdeburg, Berlin and Stettin. From Germany he left for London, England, but because of inability to obtain employment, departed on the "City of Antwerp" for New York where he landed on July 3, 1872.
After staying for a short time with his cousin, Albert Ehlers of Newark, N. J., he came to this city. He walked the Springfield streets looking for work on July 22, 1872, and shortly found a job with Doctor Lord. In three months he spoke English glibly and obtained a clerkship in the Western hotel. Some time after he accepted a similar position in Milwaukee. On a visit back to ths city he found the Western hotel for rent and with Henry Speckman started as a hotel proprietor, and in turn gave it up for an occupation as head salesman in a furniture store. The undertaking business was his last endeavor. As a Democrat he was elected to the board of supervisors in 1890 and served until 1893.
Mr. Bodie married Miss Caroline Pierik of this city in 1875. She preceded him in death leaving one son, Frank H. Bode of the wholesale grocery firm of Jenkinson-Bode company of Jacksonville. The decedent married again in 1891. His second wife, Mrs. Anna M. (Volk) Bode survives him and two children, William E. Bode, a student in Interlaken school, La Porte, Ind., and Miss Marie Caroline Bode, who is attending the local high school. IL State Journal, Springfield, IL 10-31-1915
