---Players win for fallen teammate
By Barbara Wieland and Jane Bos
---South Christian High School football players took to the field Saturday and battled their way to the state championship because that's what teammate Derrick De Young would have wanted.
---The 16-year-old South Christian junior died Saturday morning following a Friday night car crash on 100th St. SE near Hanna Lake Avenue in Gaines Township. He played on special teams for the South Christian High School varsity football team, which won Saturday, 42-21, over Caro High School.
---"We won this game for him," said junior defensive tackle Ryan Geers, one of De Young's closest friends on the team. "I know he would want us to be out here."
---Teammates considered canceling the game, possibly giving up their state championship bid. Instead, they followed the advice of De Young's family and played on, scoring 42 points -- the number De Young wore on his jersey. The emotional game ended with players and fans kneeling on the field in prayer.
---De Young's family is well known in the community -- his father is a minister at Kelloggsville Christian Reformed Church.
---"My son died this morning. He was a unique Christian and a great kid," the Rev. Maury De Young said.
---Students and teammates will attend De Young's funeral this week, taking time to mourn even as they prepare for the state championship game Friday at the Pontiac Silverdome. It was supposed to be a weekend of pure celebration for the school -- the girls basketball team also won their district tournament game at Caledonia on Friday night.
---Derrick De Young and Jonathan Stuit, a 16-year-old South Christian junior, were driving to that game about 7 p.m. when Stuit lost control of the car off 100th Street SE near Hanna Lake Avenue in Gaines Township, police said.
---The eastbound car slid and hit a tree head on, coming to rest in the westbound lane, police said. De Young suffered severe head injuries and was airlifted to Spectrum Health Butterworth Campus, according to the Kent County Sheriff's Department. He died at 9:55 a.m. Saturday, his father said.
---Stuit, also a member of the football team, was not injured in the accident, police said. Both wore seatbelts.
---While doctors treated De Young, stunned football players gathered late Friday night at the high school, agonizing for three hours about whether to play Saturday's game. The team met again Saturday morning, joined by the Rev. Ron Fynewever, also of Kelloggsville CRC.
---"We talked to the family and they said, 'Please do play the game. Use the talent you have been given,'" Athletic Director Tom Dykema said.
---"Derrick would have wanted us to play."
---The players did their best to honor their teammate, Dykema said after the victory.
---"It was a very difficult game," he said.
---De Young was a 6-foot-1, 180-pound reserve running back and member of the kickoff and punting squads.
---He played several sports and loved the outdoors, his father said.
---The two took fishing trips in Canada and the son shot his first buck this hunting season. He also participated in several missionary trips, including a weeklong trip to Mexico two years ago.
---"He's just been a neat kid," his father said.
---"He was fun loving and had lots of friends, and he liked to see people have good, clean fun."
---De Young also is survived by his mother, Cheryl De Young; brothers, Tim De Young and Chris De Young; sisters, Michelle Kramer and Lisa De Young; and grandmother, Minnie De Young.
---Visitation will be held at Stroo Funeral Home, 1095 68th St. SE, from 6 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday.
---A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Kelloggsville Christian Reformed Church, 610 52nd St. SE.
