Services Held for John W. Christians
John Wesley Christians, thirteen year old son of Supt. And Mrs. Arnold Christians of Edgerton, who had suffered intensely from a malignant tumor of the brain since last October, was relieved of his pain and suffering and was called to his Heavenly Home at 2:45 a.m. on Saturday, March 30.
----John Wesley, who was a member of the eighth grade at the Edgerton Christian Grade School, was a strong healthy child until he began suffering from severe headaches last fall. He enjoyed sports and outdoor activities and received his shoulder patch from the local Gun Club about a week before his death.
---He was taken to the Rochester Clinic on October 27, 1956, and submitted to an operation at St. Mary's hospital which was performed by Dr. H.W. Dodge on November 6. It was discovered at that time that his condition was very serious and it continually became worse. He endured his pain and suffering with patience and faith that will live on as a testimony to the brief life on earth which was given him.
---After leaving St. Mary's Hospital he was cared for at his home here. His mother was his kind and faithful nurse and was at his side almost constantly. His maternal grandmother, Mrs. Jennie Geerdes, has stayed with the family for the past five months to assist at the home.
---He was born in Hull, Iowa on August 5, 1943 and had reached the age of 13 years, 7 months and 13 days. He moved to Edgerton with his parents in 1946, and has resided her since.
---Funeral services were held on Monday, April 1 at 1:00 p.m. at the home and 1:30 p.m. at the First Christian Reformed Church. Rev. Gareth S. Kok spoke the words of comfort. For his text he chose the beautiful passage found in Job 1: verses 20, 21 and 22.
---[Note: text added from the Revised Standard Version Bible, the edition probably in use at the church.]
---Johnnie's classmates sang his favorite hymn, "He Will Hold Me Fast" and a male quartet, Albert van der Pol, Tim Baker, Clares Roskamp and Ray Hibma, sang two selections at the church service: "The Lights of Home" and "God's Way is the Best Way" and one selection: "God Will take Care of You" at the graveside service.
---Wesley De Poorter, Roland and Clares Christians, Duane and Lester Zwart, and Edwin Walhof, all cousins of the deceased were pallbearers.
---Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Christians; four brothers, Howard, who arrived home last Monday from Fort Greeley, Alaska, where he is stationed with the Army; and Clifford, Robert and Douglas at home; one sister, Cheryl Lynne, also at home; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Jennie Gerdes of Edgerton and many relatives and friends. The Southwest Christian High School and Christian Grade School were closed last Monday afternoon in respect to their Superintendent and his family and his classmates and a large body of students attended the services.
Several relatives and friends attended the funeral from different towns in Minn., Iowa and So. Dak. And Mrs. Evert van der Pol attended from Lynden, Wash.
