Pieter was a "snabbe" skipper, On February 5, 1757 he loaned f 200 from Frerick Hiddingh and his brother from Gasselte at 3 1/2%. His father was guarantor for the loan.
An inventory of his goods was made on February 16, 1764 in preparation for his 2nd marriage (this was done to safeguard the inheritance of children from the deceased person)
This inventory is still in exisatance and lists all his belongings as well as debts. it underscores that Pieter had no house ashore but lived on his ship. The paucity of property that he possessed was more than likely shared by most of our relatives in that area at that time. However it would be much greater than some of our other ancestors.
One "snabbe" ship with the movable goods belonging to it:
one bed, one chest of drawers, 7 chairs, a small table, a kettle or tea kettle, an anchor, a pancake pan, 5 large bowls, 7 "telderties" (?), 2 dozen thee goods (thee service?), a bible with silver clasps. Some items of small worth or not worth mentioning.
Against these assets is a list of debts totalling f 553 including f 52 for a years room and board for his children owing to his father.
Pieter and his 2nd wife to be were awarded all the goods with the provosion that they had to care for the children until age 20, "keeping them in food, drink and clothing, teaching them to read and write and to teach them the Reformed religion. As well each child was to receive f 125 when he/she turned 20. Only 1 child is known but the wording leaves no doubt there were others.
