he Goldtree brothers, Nathan, Isaac, Marcus and Morris, were early pioneers in San Luis Obispo County. Their main business, which brought huge success, was sale of all kinds of merchandize in stores they initially rented and later owned. Nathan Goldtree started his first store in San Luis Obispo at the old Quintana corner with his partner Morris Cohn. He was obviously quite successful making money and in 1867 he dissolved the partnership with Morris Cohn and brought on his brothers Isaac, Morris and Marcus to the business, known from thereon, as the Goldtree Brothers. They added a store in San Miguel in the early 1870s, a major department store in San Luis Obispo (Goldtree Block) in 1882, sometime later a store in Arroyo Grande and around 1894 one in Guadalupe, California, USA (this store was later run by William Rosenblum). One of the brothers always was located in San Francisco as buyer and I believe to organize the trading.
They established an international trading organization. Morris Goldtree with two of his wifes brothers, Leon and Carlos Liebes started a business in Santa Ana, El Salvador, in 1888 Goldtree, Liebes & Co. (still exists today as Exagroli). They opened another location in San Salvador in 1908. They had further business locations in San Francisco as well as in Hamburg, Germany. It is clear that their network of stores was very successful, but that was by no means their only business activity. They were amongst the founders of the Narrow Gauge Railroad Co., which later became the Pacific Coast Railroad (early 1880s). Isaac was involved in bringing the Southern Pacific railroad to SLO (they even got a station named after them Goldtree Station). The narrow gauge railroad played a major role in the commercial development in SLO County by moving goods between the farming communities and the harbor at Avila and later on to San Francisco once the Southern Pacific connected to SLO (1895).
The Goldtree brothers were also heavily involved in land development starting in the early 1860s. They purchased thousands of acres of land in several locations. Probably not all were commercially successful, but several are noteworthy. They owned quite a bit of land around Soda Lake in the Carizzo Plain in southern SLO County. There was some interest in mining and also oil exploration but I believe that it was not very successful. The area today belongs to Carizzo Plain National Monument. On the successful side, they owned a major tract of land close to Guadalupe, California, USA (the Goldtree Tract), which was used and purchased by Union Sugar to build a sugar Beet Factory around 1899.
They had quite a bit of land around Goldtree Station a few miles north of SLO (they actually granted SP the right of way through their land as part of the deal to bring the rail to SLO). They operated a large vineyard (90 acres) in the vicinity of Goldtree Station in 1888 and in 1891 produced 4000 gallons of wine, mainly Zinfandel and some Riesling. Isaac also owned the Goldtree Vineyard Tract in SLO (south of the city center) which became a housing development.
Nathan lived in the San Luis Obispo area from the beginning in 1855/56 until about 1871. He moved to San Francisco in 1871 and stayed there until his death in 1902. In 1871 he shared a house on 632 Market St. with his brother Isaac. They operated their various businesses on Battery St. (23-27) between 1869 and at least 1902. Nathan soon moved to 507 Pine St., where he lived between 1873 and 1877. He married Augusta Kaminsky on March 5th, 1878 and they moved to 930 Eddy St. (NE corner of Gough and Eddy), a house that no longer exists. Nathan and his family kept their residence at 930 Eddy St.
