Ernest William Leitner was born January 13, 1917 in Belle Fourche. He was the son of John and Pearl (Hunnicutt) Leitner. Ernest grew up on the family ranch located west of Belle Fourche. In December of 1941 he was united in marriage to Veryl Heetland in Broadus, Montana. Following their marriage Ernest and Veryl lived at the ranch where Ernest worked until he reached the age of 92.
Ernest was the last surviving member of the "3 V Cowboys" that worked on the 3 V Ranch. He loved the ranch life, and was a smart cattleman. He raised horses, and loved the fresh air of the outdoors. He also had a great sense of humor, and was a good husband and father.
