"Two Residents Die In Traffic Accidents
Residents of this community were doubly shocked and saddened over the week end as reports circulated concerning the deaths of fourteen-year-old Darla Jean Hogard, and Vern Davids, 51, In separate traffic accidents. Darla, daughter of Mr.and Mrs. Vernon Hogard, died shortly before 6:00 p.m., Friday, May 5 from Injuries sustained when her bicycle was struck by a car driven by Craig Donald Carson, 17, also of Buffalo Center. Mr. Davids was killed In a one-car accident Justsouth of Mankato, Minnesota on highway 21 during the early-morning hours of Sunday, May 7. He, his wife, Mildred and Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Pltkin were returning to Buffalo Center when the mishap occurred."

"Yern Davids, 51, Killed In Car Crash Near Mankato
Mr. and Mrs. Vern Davids and Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Pitkin were traveling south on Highway 22 after leaving Mankato, Minnesota shortly after 1:00 a.m., Sunday, May 7 when they suddenly detected a man crouched in the middle of the pavement.In reaction to the situation, Mr. Davids swerved his car to the right. Upon striking loose gravel on the shoulder of the road, he apparently lost control of the vehicle.
The car rolled over as it caromed into the ditch and came to a siop after striking a tree. The vehicle was lying on its top, according to reports of the mishap. Mr. Davids was partially pinned under the car as the driver's door openedas the car rolled.
Passersby came to their rescue and In a matter of minutes a sheriff's department car was also at the scene. Through united efforts the car was lifted enough to release Mr. Davids from under the vehicle and emergency treatment was givenby one of the police officers. A later statement said he died before an ambulance arrived.
The four occupants of the car were taken to a Mankato hospital where the official pronouncement was made concerning Mr. David's death and the others were rushed to emergency. Mrs. (Mildred) Davids was treated for head lacerations andbruises; Mrs. Pitkin sustained broken ribs and a possible whiplash in the accident; Mr. Pitkin was treated for a wrenched shoulder and numerous bruises before being released.
Mrs. Davids and Mr. and Mrs. Pitkin were brought to Buffalo Center by the Pitkins' daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Dean Ostrander who live in Mankato, arriving here at 7:00 a.m. Sunday morning.
Funeral services for Vern Davids were held Wednesday, May 10 at 1:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church with Winter Funeral Service in charge, Rev. Leonard Felton officiating. Pallbearers were Ben Gruis, Julius Ostercamp, Robert Bronleewe,LeRoy Fisk, Lawrence Pitkin and Julian Peterson. Special music was provided by Mrs. Robert Bronleewe at the organ with numbers by William Smidt, Donald Miller, Les Feldick, and Dr. Donald Johnson accompanied by Mrs. Deane Jurgens.Burial was in Olena Mound Cemetery.
Memorial services were held at 10:00 a.m. in the school conducted by Rev. Felton. Vern had been a school bus route driver for 12 years and a member of the custodial staff for nearly four years.
LaVern Davids was born May 11, 1920 to John and Anna Fisher Davids at Buffalo Center, Iowa. He died May 7, 1972 at the age of 51 years, 11 months and 26 days. He was educated in the local schools and followed his chosen occupation offarming.
On December 31, 1939 he was baptized upon profession of faith in Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and has been a faithful member of the First Baptist Church. He served his Lord in many capacities; for several years as Sunday SchoolSuperintendent along with holding other offices in the church. He served one year as president of the Buffalo Center PTA.
On September 17, 1943 he was united in holy matrimony with Thresa Winter and to this union three children were born. She passed away March 4, 1968 after a lingering illness. It was shortly after her death that Vern accepted thecustodial position at school.
On December 28, 1971 he was married to Mildred Johnson at Mason City, Iowa.
Vern is survived by his wife, Mildred; five daughters: Mrs. Joe (Karen) Fennell, Fairview, Illinois; Sheryl, Dawson, Minnesota; Susan, Mason City; Marcia and Jean, at home; two sons: Kim and Bradley, at home and three grandchildren. Alsosurviving are two sisters: Mrs. Wilminette Beekman, Carlton, Minnesota; Mrs. Louis (Annabelle) Sapp, of Buffalo Center; two brothers: Harm of Lakota, and John, Jr., of Buffalo Center in addition to numerous other relatives and a host offriends.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Emma, and his parents." <>
