Nicholas Barrick, successfully engaged in farming and stock-raising in White Eyes township, was born in Crawford township, Coshocton county, Ohio, March 13, 1842, his parents being Frederick and Catherine (Storm) Barrick, the former anative of Harrison county, Ohio and the latter of Pennsylvania. The father, who carried on agricultural pursuits throughout his active business career, came to Crawford township in 1840 and here made his home until called to his finalrest in 1886, when he had attained the age of eighty years. His wife passed away in 1895 at the age of eighty-three years. Their family numbered nine children, four of whom still survive, namely: Lewis, of Bakersville, Ohio; Nicholas, ofthis review; Israel, a resident of Brazil, Indiana; and Elizabeth, the wife of John Berger, of Crawford township.
Nicholas Barrick was reared on the home farm and attended the district schools as opportunity offered. On the 21st of October, 1864, he enlisted for service in the Union army as a member of Company C, Seventy-eighth Ohio VolunteerInfantry, and was honorably discharged on the 11th of July, 1865. Subsequent to his marriage he began farming, operating a tract of rented land in Mill Creek township for nineteen years. On the expiration of that period he was engaged inagricultural pursuits in Jefferson township for four years, making his home near Warsaw. Subsequently he purchased a small farm of fifty acres in Knox county, Ohio, but after four years sold the property and returned to Coshocton county,where he bought a place of one hundred and fifty-six acres in New Castle township. This he successfully cultivated until the spring of 1906, when he sold the land and purchased his present farm of seventy acres in White Eyes township. Inaddition to the work of general farming he also carried on stock-raising, and is widely recognized as a prosperous and enterprising agriculturist of the community.
In August, 1867, Mr. Barrick was united in marriage to Miss Susannah Ames, whose birth occurred April 3, 1850, her parents being Henry and Malinda (Smith) Ames. She was one of a family of ten children, nine of whom are still living. Mr.and Mrs. Barrick have four children; Mary J., the widow of Harland Bower, by whom she had one son, Harland, who is at home; Henry, of Jefferson township; Malinda, the wife of Homer Turner, of Keene township; and George E., likewise aresident of Keene township.
In his political views Mr. Barrick is a stanch republican, while his religious faith is indicated by his membership in St. JohnÙus Episcopal church, with which his wife is also identified. He is likewise affiliated with the Grand Army ofthe Republic at Keene, thus maintaining pleasant relations with his old army comrades.

VENERABLE NATIVE OF COUNTY DIES AT HOME IN KEENE-TP
Nicholas Barrick 77, a Civil War veteran, died at his home Tuesday evening at 9:30, two miles east of Keene, his death resulting from paralysis following three paralytic strokes he had suffered since last Thursday.
Mr. Barrick was born and reared in Coshocton-co. and had resided on a farm two miles west of Fresno for the past 14 years until seven weeks ago when he purchased and moved to the farm two miles east of Keene, formerly owned by GeorgeMachwart. All his life he followed farming, and was known as a splendid neighbor and an upright citizen.
He was a member of the Methodist church in Fresno.
He is survived by his wife and the following children: Henry Barrick, of Jackson-tp; Mrs. D. R. Geese, Fresno and Mrs. Homer Tuner, Fresno Route 2; and Earl Barrick, Fresno Route 2. Mrs. Homer Turner will be unable to attend the funeral of her father on account of the Turner home being quarantined. Mr. and Mrs. TurnerÙus daughter, Mary, has scarlet fever.
The funeral procession will leave the late home Friday at 12 oÙuclock and the services will be conducted at the Fresno M.E. church with Rev. S. M. Firestone in charge. Burial will be made in the Fairview cemetery at Fresno.

Nicholas Barrick, son of Frederick and Catherine Barrick, was born in Crawford Township, Coshocton County, Ohio, March 13, 1842, departed this life Nov. 23, 1920, aged 78 years, 8 months, and 10 days. With the exception of four yearsspent in Knox county, his entire life was spent in the county of his nativity.
Mr. BarrickÙus army career in the war between the states, bears a mark of unselfish and sacrificial aim. In the month of Oct. 1864, he stepped into the room of his uncle, Nicholas Storm, volunteering as a substitute in Company 78,Regiment of Ohio Veterans Infantry. His certificate of honorable discharge, issued from Louisville, Ky., beats this commendable notation: ÙSNo objection to his being enlisted is known to exist.ÙT His Grand Army of the Republic membershipwas held in the James Cooper Post at Keene. He is at least among the very last of the survivors of this post, as he was among the last of the old veterans, and the last of his fatherÙus family. Just as the war clouds were lifted to reveal the sun of his full-blooming life, in the fall of 1866, he took a wife, a Miss Susan Ames. There came to bless the home of this united couple, four children, two sons and two daughters. Thesefrom eldest to youngest are, Mrs. Daniel Geese, Fresno; Henry M. Barrick of Crooked Run near Roscoe, and Mrs. Homer Turner and Earl Barrick, both on the Fresno route 2. These with their companions and 10 of the 12 grandchildren, othermore distant relatives and many friends remain to suffer the loss.
Mr. Barrick followed the occupation of farming, owning and operating a wagon coal mine; but never himself became a coal digger.
The early religious impressions of this departed brother were received from the Lutherans, but just after his marriage, he with his young wife, confessed Christ in the Knob Episcopalian church. About 7 or 8 years ago, they transferredtheir membership to the White Eyes Methodist Episcopal church, the church in which he retained his membership till his final departure.
How one influences children for good or bad? In this last exchange of church membership, when they presented themselves at the White Eyes altar, and because he had been told to do as grandpa and grandma did, their grandson, HarlandQuinton Bower, who has made his home with them, toddled up as a 10 year old boy, and regardless of their impromptu persuasion of him to return to his seat, insisted he wanted to go in with them and be as they. Simultaneously the pastorproceeded to receive him on his own word and the present members nodded assent. Harland has remained a member of that church ever since and has rendered efficient service.
According to neighbors and friends, Mr. Barrick was of a kind and amiable disposition. To the occupants the home seems void. His sojourn has enriched the community, and the church triumphant has profited by the militant churchÙus loss. Hewas a congenial official of his church with whom to consult, and had the rare privilege, before going to meet his Lord, of subscribing to the willingly supporting the world famous Methodist Missionary Centenary movement.
This brother had suffered much in his declining years from a complication of causes and general debility, being able to work very little in the past 3 years. His last illness was scarcely a week in duration, but intense in its suffering.At last he quietly passed into the great beyond, leaving us all a legacy of a peaceful countenance, apparently the index of the serenity of his departed spirit.
