THE SURNAME OF ACKERMANN versus AKKERMANN.
Throughout the research of the descendents of Oltman we find both surnames used because the authors of the material have chosen their own spelling for whatever reason. It is a little bit of a dichotomy that the children born in Neermoor,Ostfriesland, Germany have a Netherlands Surname. Perhaps, this is because this ancestor (Oltman) or his father (Oltman Peters) was descended from Netherlands stock.
This FTM Author has chosen to use the surname of Akkermann, at least for children of this ancestor (Oltman) and has attempted to denote on each source reference for the name, how it was spelled in the source used. Since we have no birthcertificates or marriage certificates to ascertain the spellings, our next source(s) in a hierarchy of name and vital statistics validation is Tombstones and Obituaries. The reason the FTM Author has chosen to use Akkermann as the surnamefor the children of this ancestor (Oltman) is the following:
a. Jan Oltman Akkermann's Tombstone and Obituary spell his name as AKKERMANN. Likewise his son Oltman Jan's, buried in the same plot under the family name stone, name is AKKERMANN. b. Obituaries from the Ostfriesische Nachrichten (German Newspaper in the middle west of the USA) for Jan Oltman's siblings all use the spelling of AKKERMANN. Namely, his brother Engelke, his sister Hempe (Akkermann) Wilhelms, and hissister-in-law, Topke E. (Brouer) Akkermann, wife of Jan Oltman's brother Meike.
Thus, it follows with a great amount of certainty that the family surname was and is AKKERMANN. Accordingly, for the next generation of descendants (the children) of Meike and Engelke, the surname has been changed to AKKERMANN, and willremain so unless a reliable source is found to the contrary. For all the descendants of Jan Oltman Akkermann, the surname has been changed to Akkermann, and will remain so unless a reliable source is found to the contrary.
