Frank, second son of George Max and Isabella, was educated at Templeton school in Bedford. On leaving school he went up to join his brother who was articled to Solomon and Thomson, a firm of Attorneys in Johannesburg. He had hardly been there a year when the Anglo Boer War started. He and his two brothers joined the Imperial Light Horse on its formation in September 1899 after maKing their way down to Pietermaritzburg. Hardly a month later the Regiment was in action at Elandslaagte where he was slightly wounded. He was again wounded at Wagon Hill. After taKing part in the action around Ladysmith and its subsequent relief his squadron was sent up to relieve MafeKing, but shortly before that took place he was severely wounded in an engagement at Maritzani. Six of his comrades were killed in this action and he was fortunate to have only been wounded. A bullet cut through his scalp, leaving a permanent mark. A few weeks later he was present when his elder brother, Grahame was killed in action at Witteklip on the farm Rietfontein, near Bronkhorstspriut in the Transvaal. He served with the I.L.H. throughout the war taKing part in the March on Pretoria, and later hard fighting in the Western Transvaal and the OFS. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant shortly beore the war ended.

The war changed Frank' career. He was promoted to Lieutenant and when the war ended, he joined the South African Constabulary and was given equal rank. This forcewas changed to the South African Mounted Riflemen with Frank as a Captain in the 4th Regiment. In 1911 he was in charge of Potchefstroom and shortly after was transferred to Rustenburg He had become adedicated soldier in every way. He was convinced that there would be war with Germany one day and he did a lot of reading in preparation for it: when it did come he was bitterly disappointed that thepermanent force had been left behind when General Louis Botha went to South West Africa.

When at last the opportunity came, he took it and joined the Kings Royal Rifles and went over to France. After some experience in the trenches, he was put on a Seniority Course and promotedto Major, later as Acting Lieut-Colonel. In a letter to his sister Myrtle after he had experienced a terrible winter at the front, he wrote that he saw liitle prospect of survival and would considerhimself fortunate if he came through with the loss of a limb. He was killed in action on 22 March 1918 at Bapaune, near Troans Wood in France. His death occurred during the last despairing push the Germans made. In a letter to his widow, Norah, his Colonel wrote:

"According to eye-witnesses the Germans attacked in mass and the last that was seen of your husband wasof him lying on top of the trench firing at the advancing enemy. He was a very brave man and and a very gallant officer". His brother-in-law Douglas William Sampson was the executor of his estate.
