The Groninger Knol family is an old, rich and considerable farming family, that occurs very early with a family name and family crest.
The oldest sure ancestor is Claes Harmens "offte Knol", farmer and horse merchant in Startenhuizen, which was then part of Eppenhuizen.
Claes Harmens is the presumably son of Harmen Knol and Hijke, who entered the first half of the 16th century lived on "De Knol" in the kerspel Eelswerd on the Knolweg.
In 1590 Claes Hermans "offte Knoll" still lived in a 'heerdt tie Eppingahuyzen'. This Claes was guilty of trading outside staple law around 1550 from the city of Groningen (see "The Chronicle of Abel Eppens tho Equart", p. 131).
Knol means Dingstede (= Richtsheuvel) and was a small piece of land on the north side of the church. There the targeting was exercised and the nearby farm got its name "offte Knoll" from that place.

When consulting the Index of personal names, attention must still be paid that names, although written differently, mean the same thing, also next to and through each other. No difference is made eg between Cnol, Cnols, Knoll and Knol, but all those names based on the present spelling: Knol.
