    Friendly Ploughing.-- On the entrance of Mr David Rankine, formerly of Wardneuk, into the farm of Goatfoot, in the parish of Galston, a large number of his friends and acquaintances turned out on Saturday last to give him a "lift" with his ploughing.
    There were no less than 80 ploughs on the field. A large amount of work was done. Mr Rankine was obliged to leave ‘Wardneuk"(where his ancestors had lived for many generations), in lieu of its forming the probable site of county asylum. The Duke of Portland, however, kindly allowed him Goatfoot, which is a larger Farm.

    TO THE KILMARNOCK WEEKLY POST. Dear Sir,—The motion I made yesterday at the Parochial Board not being seconded, of course fell to the ground, but I am under the necessity of having recoarse to the press (God bless the press, the bulwark' under Grace, of British liberty.) The motion I made was, "That this Board begs leave to express their just indignation at the way the Commissioners of Supply have treated this great county; and particularly his Grace the Duke of Portland, in departing from the resolution come to at a general meeting to build a County Lunatic Asylum at Wardneuk, a farm belonging to his Grace, who, in the most liberal manner, and like a true nobleman, generously consented to give us 30 acres of ground at the low price of £2 10s per acre, when he could have procured a much higher rent from the farmer tenant, my old, honest acquaintance, David Rankin, whose forbears had been in the property, I believe, above 200 years. Now, Mr Editor, in conclusion, I have to observe that if the county persevere in their iniquitous Intention of building the new Asylum at Glengall, a farm belonging to the Roselle estate, possessing none of the advantages Wardneuk has, I shall have great pleasure, humble though I may be, in proceeding to London (always under grace) and laying the whole details before her Majesty's Secretary of State, Sir George Grey, a most amiable, and, I believe, pious man; but, having so much of the milk of human kindness, be forgets that Magistrates are bound by the Word of God "to be a terror to evil doers." Mr Finnie, in his admirable speech, so well detailed the many advantages of Wardneuk—with regard to atnple supply of water, the facility of easy access to the beautiful country around Craufurdland, Rowallan, and Assloss—that I shall not take up the valuable time of your readers with a recapitulation. I am afraid there is some underwork jobbing, &c., going on in the County, which must be put a stop to—amen. The appointment of a new Convener will come on soon, and I mean to propose my worthy relative, William Cooper, Esq., of Failford, a capital man of business, and an enemy to all useless extravagance. These are not times to trifle with public interests. This great nation may soon be involved in a dreadful war; for it requires no Solomon to see that the elements of strife and contention are rapidly concentrating, and will burst in a fearful storm over the sinful nations of Europe, when great expenses will be incurred to carry on our part in a just and necessary war.—l have the honour to remain. dear Sir, your humble servant, JOHN GLEN PARKER.     On Wednesday last a sow belonging to Mr David Rankin, farmer, Wardneuk, had three fine bull calves. It is rather curious that for several years past all the cows that fed in the same stall had two calves at a time.

    Local family history society is thriving
    WE RECENTLY reported that Dr James Borland was considering starting a family history society in the South west of Scotland.
    That brought a response from Frank Inglis of Bishopton who is the secretary of the Glasgow and West of Scotland Family History Society.
    It has nearly 800 members including descendants in North America and the antipodes. There are also independent family history societies in Troon and Largs.
    Frank was brought up in Kilmarnock but most of his relatives in the area spell their name English.
    Frank’s grandfather was Hance English a roadmender in Riccarton. Hance’s father died in an accident at Portland Iron Works, Hurlford.
    Hance had two brothers, Samuel and Francis, who were miners in Bankhead (now Springside) and many of their descendants are still there. There was also a sister whose married name was Kissock. Frank would be delighted to hear from any of their descendants. His family also includes the Rankins. Frank’s maternal grandfather was a Rankin who was born at Wardneuk Farm. According to Mackay’s History of Kilmarnock her father David Rankin was a direct descendant of the town miller That family lived at Barbadoes Bank at the gate to Howard Park. Anyone who can give Frank more information about these families or anyone interested in the Glasgow and West of Scotland Family History Society.

    Improvements and their Results-
    lf all the towns in the county were to make as many and as great improvements within the next ten years as Kilmarnock has done within the last five, we would outshine all the other counties in Scotland. After a considerable period of quiescence, Kilmarnock has thrown its lethargic covering, and aroused itself to do something for its own improvement and advancement. And right worthily and earnestly has it set about the work of regeneration. We have only to point to this corner and to that to show what has been done and what is yet in the way of being done. Among the things in course of being done is the Corn Exchange, which when finished there will not be a handsomer building of the kind in the county. Among the things to be done is the erection of a new Academy, the play-ground of which has been rather curtailed by the Corn Exchange. We hope to live to see this desirable thing accomplished. Among the things about to be done we may notice the very important one of a poor's-house, the necessity for which grows upon us daily; and last, though not least, the proposed county asylum at Wardneuk. We speak of this as a thing to be done, for though the initial step has been taken, the greatest portion remains. We are certain that all will have learned with satisfaction that this building will be so near our own locality. And yet there will, we fear, be one exception, and that unit the present tenant, Mr Rankin. Mr Rankin, directly and ancestrally, has been connected with this locality for three hundred years. An ancient "forbear" of his was tenant of the old mill, which stood where now our elegant and commodious Cross is, and that certainly gives him a pretty intimate connection with Kilmarnock. For himself he is the oldest tenant on his Grace's estate, and has seen not a few changes and improvements hereon. Doubtless, he will in some measure, regret the latest alteration which cuts off so considerable a slice from the Wardneuk farm, though he may grant the gain to Kilmarnock. However, as Mr Rankin is first class farmer, and skilled in all the latest improvements in his profession, his Grace's agent, or some other worthy proprietor, will in all likelihood be happy to do for him what his merits as an agriculturist most richly deserve. We should be sorry to see Mr Rankin's connection with Kilmarnock quite severed.

    Cattle Plague - The plague has now found its way into our very midst. Mr. McGavin , dairyman, Morton Place, had a young cow which showed the fatal symptoms at the end of last week. and on Monday it died. The rest of the stock is as yet unaffected. This is the first case that has occurred in town. The disease is also reported to have broken out at the farm of Goatfoot. (Mr. Rankin's), near Galston.

    We David Rankin, Farmer, Crawlaw, in the parish of Loudoun, and Mary Kerr or Rankin, spouses for the love, favour and affection, which we have and bear to each other, and for other good causes and considerations have resolved with mutual advice and Consent to grant these presents in manner underwritten. That is to say I the said David Rankin, do hereby give, grant, assign, dispone, convey and make over to and in favour of the said Mary Kerr or Rankin, my spouse in liferent, during all the days and years of her life. For her liferent alimentary use allinarly and to Robert Kerr Rankin, Margaret Rankin, Jeanie Rankin, Mary Rankin, Agnes Rankin and Janet Kerr Rankin, my children equally and to their respective issue per stirpes, equally among them and failing any of them without having lawful issue, then to the survivors of my said children, and the lawful issue of any of them who may have predeceased me and my said wife, the division being per stirpes in fee, heritably and irredeemably. All and sundry Lands, Tenements, Heritages, goods, gear, debts, Sums of money and in general the whole Estate, Heritable and Moveable, real or personal now living and belonging, or which shall be owing and belonging to me at my decease, including any Fund or Estate, Heritable or moveable, real or personal, of which it may at the time of my decease have the power of disposal, together with the whole, rents, interest, dividends, profits and produce of the premises due at my decease, or to become due thereafter, on the Writings, title deeds, and Securities of the same And on the other hand of the said Mary Kerr or Rankin with the special advise and consent of the said David Rankin, my Husband, and of the said David Rankin for myself and my interest and as taken burden on me for my said wife, and we the said spouses with joint consent and assent give grant assign, dispone, convey and make over from me the said Mary Kerr or Rankin, and my heirs and successors to and in favour of the said David Rankin my husband, in liferent during all the days and years of his life, for his liferent alimentary use allinarly, and to the said Robert Kerr Rankin, Margaret Rankin, Jeanie Rankin, Mary Rankin, Agnes Rankin and Janet Kerr Rankin, our children equally and to their respective issue per stirpes equally among them, and failing any of them without having lawful issue then to the survivors of our said children, and the lawful issue of any of them, who may have predeceased me and my said Husband. (The division being per stirpes) in fee heritably and irredeemably All and Sundry Lands, Tenements, Heritages, goods, gear, debts & sums of money and in general the whole Estate, Heritable or movable real and personal, now owing and belonging, or which shall be owing and belonging to me at my decease, including any Funds or Estate, Heritable or moveable, real or personal of which I may at the time of my decease have the power of disposal together with the whole rents, interest dividends, profit and produce of the premises due at my decease or to become due thereafter, or the writings, title deeds and Securities of the same, and whichever of us the Said Spouses may predecease the other the predecessor binds his or her respective heirs to implement his or her part of these premises and to execute and deliver all writs and deed necessary for carrying the same and the obligation on the party deceasing into effect.
    Moreover we the said David Rankin and Mary Kerr or Rankin Spouses with mutual consent and assent, hereby severally Nominate and appoint the survivor of us, whom failing, our said children or the survivors or survivor of them, to be our sole Executor and Intromitter or Executors and Intromitters with the whole goods gear, debts and effects that shall belong to the predecessor or survivor of us the said spouses with and under the conditions and Declaration following sigs that the survivor of us shall be obliged to make payments of any debts owing at the predecessors death which may have been contracted by us or either of us during our joint lives. And under the further condition that upon the death of the longest liver of us the said spouses our said dispones above named, shall be bound and obliged to make payment out of the first and readiest of our Means and Estate, of the debts which may have been contracted by the longest liver of us the said spouses, together with the sickbed & funeral expenses of the longest liver and all of the following legacies to the parties after named Viz?? To the said Jeanie Rankin the sum of one hundred pounds Sterling and that over and above and in addition to her share of our Means and Estate above mentioned and (signed) to Mary or Minnie Rankin residing in family with us our granddaughter, the sum of fifty pounds Sterling. Payable said legacies at the fixed term of Martinmas or Whitsunday that shall happen after the death of the longest liver of us the said Spouses and shall also make payment of such additional legacies or provisions that we the Said Spouses or either of us or the survivor of us shall leave and bequeath by any writing under our hands clearly expressive of our will although not formally executed And to prevent doubts it is declared that the shares of succession offering to our said children shall become vested interests in their persons at and only upon the death of the longest liver of us the said spouses. And we the said David Rankin and Mary Kerr or Rankin Spouses hereby provide and declare that the foresaid provisions in so far as in favour of or descending upon females shall be expressly exclusive of the jus marite and right of administration of any husbands they have married or may marry and shall not be effectible by the debts or deeds of such husbands or any diligence or execution competent to follow thereon. And of the said David Rankin further provide & declare that the acceptance of the foresaid provisions in favour of my said children shall be deemed and taken to be in satisfaction to them of legitim and executry and of all claims legally competent to them And of the said David Rankin hereby Nominate and Appoint the said Mary Kerr or Rankin in the event of her surviving me, whom failing such of my children above named at shall have attained majority, and be resident in Great Britain, to be Tutors and Curators to such of my children as shall be in pupilarity or minority at the time of my decease, during the respective pupilarities or minorities of such children. Declaring always that a majority of said Tutors and Curators who shall accept, shall at all times form a quorum and give and grant to my said wife, whom failing to my said children as Tutors & Curators foresaid, all the powers competent to Tutors and Curators by the Law of Scotland for managing the estate and effects of Minors hereby Declaring that said Tutors or Curators shall not be liable for omissions of any kind or for not doing diligence or for one another but each for her or his own actual intromissions only. And we the said spouses reserve to us and each of us full power at anytime to alter, innovate, or revoke these presents in whole or in part as we or either of us may see proper. And declaring always that these presents in so far as not attested, innovated or revoked by us or by either of us, shall be valid and effectual though found lying by us or either of us at the time of his or her death or in the custody of any other person for our or either of our behalf with the delivery whereof we have dispensed and hereby dispense for ever, And we consent to the registration hereon for preservation. In witness whereof these presents consisting of this and the two preceding pages written by James Law Crawford, Clerk to Daniel Stireal Love, Writer in Beith, are subscribed by us, the said David Rankin and Mary Kerr or Rankin, Spouses at Beith upon the twenty fifth day of May in the year One Thousand Eight hundred and Seventy five, before these witnesses, Alexander Love, also Clerk to the said Daniel Stireal Love, writer in Beith and the said James Law Crawford. Declaring that the word 'Jeanie', occurring on the ninth line counting from the top of page first hereof, is written upon an erasure before subscription, (Signed) David Rankin, Mary Rankin, Alex.
