Slaves of Stanley Kittrell
The following were listed as slaves and supposedly were given their
freedom. Some of them took the name of Kittrell when they left the
plantation. Some remain to live in Ayden area.
One story about them concerned Toney Kittrell. In Henry T. King's
Sketches of Pitt County the murder of Willis Briley is mentioned. Four
Negros were arrested. One of them was Toney Kittrell. He was not
convicted in this case.
The names of the slaves were: Toney, Wright, Charles, Frank, Tom,
Ivy, Dick, Esther, Lucy, Ben, Dinah, Lewis, Ned and Mary.
Stanley Kittrell House: It has been said that this house is haunted. James
Merritt, who did some work on this house says he was working there and
heard someone walk through the house. His worker was outside. On several
occasions he said things happen there he could not explain. His worker even
left one time and went up the road to wait for him and would not return to the
house. He says he will never work there again.
On another occasion some people were installing a gas line. One was outside
hooking up the line. The one inside reported the stove lit and he saw flames.
The outside line had not been turn on. They left and would not go back to
finish the job.
Some one else had purchased the house and is trying to restore it. I have not
heard any other stories. The ones I have heard swear to them. WBK
