JOHN STERLING DURST PIONEER MINISTER

The son of pioneer Texans. John Sterling Durst (1841-1924) was born in Leon County. After service in the Confederate Army, a sermon moved him to join the Church of Christ ministry. When the Rev. Durst bought a nearby farm and moved his family here in 1883, Kimble County was still a frontier region. He preached in this area and on summer tours around the state. A respected leader, he served as county judge, 1902-1910, and as county school superintendent. He was married to Adelaide Reed (d. 1874) and then to Lilla Kittrell and had a large family.

Cedric Durst was the son of Hattie Callahan and John M. Durst (b.7/23/1868, d.7/10/1916), grandson of John Sterling Durst (10/20/1841 - 8/31/1924), great-grandson of John Maria Durst (2/4/1797 - 2/9/1851) of Nacagdoches, Texas. John Maria Durst is my great-great-great grandfather down the line of his son Bruno. Cedric had 3 sisters and, at the time of his death in 1971, two children.
Once I learned I was distantly related to Cedric, I became fascinated with his accomplishments as a baseball player. Feel free to email me with any more questions or comments.

Death of Elder John S. Durst. Elder John S. Durst, for more than 40 ye;irs a resident of Junction, Texas, died at his home in that city, on Sunday, Aug- ust 81st, after an illness of several months. In making mention of the death of this grand old man, the Junction Eagle said : "Hundreds of friends throughout this entire section of the State was made sad hist Sunday when the death of John Ster- ling Durst was announced. For several months Mr. Durst has been in ill health and had recently gone to Houston for an operation, but was advised that nothing could be done for him, and he returned home to pass the last few days with his friends with whom he has labored so long. "Deceased was born in the Old Fort at Nacogdoches, October 20, 1841, his father having been a pioneer of that section, where, at the outbreak of the Mexican war, he was representative from Texas at Monclova, which was then the capital of the Mexican State of which Texas was a part. He had also been an Alcalde under the Mexican government. A few years later, the family moved to what is now Leon County and the father of the deceased named that county when it was organized, in 1846, for Captain Alonzo de Leon. At the outbreak of the Civil War Mr. Durst volunteered his services to the Confederacy and served throughout the \var as a captain. At the end of this struggle, he took up his ministeral work and for more than sixty years he has been active as a minister in the Church of Christ, "In 1880, he came to Kimble County where he resided until his death. Elder Wesley Hoover of Eden conducted the services and W. C. Brad- shaw read a final statement written by the deceased just before his death. One of the largest crowds ever attending a funeral service here, was present Monday. District Court recessed for the occasion and many friends of the family from neighboring towns were here."

    Special to The News

BROWNWOOD, Texas, Sept. 27, - The Rev. John S. Durst died a few days ago at Menard, following an illness of lengthy duration.

John Sterling Durst was born in the Old Stone Fort at Nacogdoches Oct. 20, 1841, his father having been a pioneer of that section. At the outbreak of the Texas Revolution, Mr. Durst was a Representative from Texas in the Legislature of Monclova and Texas, the Legislature holding its sessions at Monclova. In later years the family moved to Leon County, and the father of the Rev. John Sterling Durst in 1846 named that county in honor of Capt. Alonzo de Leon. De Leon was one of the original men to whom extensive land grants were made by the Mexican and Spanish Governments.

In 1880 the Rev. John S. Durst moved to Kimble County, where he resided until his death. At that time there were very few settlements in this part of the State, and in the forty-four years that he lived in the great section of which Kimble was the center he took an active part in educational and religious affairs, being in every sense of the word a real missionary and pioneer educator.

The old fort at Nacogdoches, which was torn down some years ago, was built in 1778, according to the most authentic information by Senor Gil y Barbo. The most authentic information also indicates that it was not intended for a fort but for a place of refuge and strong house in case of attack. The fact that there were no loopholes in the walls leads to that conclusion. In its time it was put to various uses, being a residence, courthouse, alcalde office and saloon in turn as the years passed.

History and legend tell of the many important incidents that took place between its walls. Sam Houston spent many a night there, David Crockett spent one or two days and nights there on his way from Tennessee to San Antonio, where he lost his life; General Thomas J. Rusk spent days and nights there. Gen. James Long was there in 1819, when he came from the Neutral Ground with his revolution, and it was there, so legend says, that the first printing press in Texas was set up by Horatio Biglow, in 1812. It was there, too, that the Fredonian rebellion of Hayden Edwards had its inception in 1824.

The Edwards family was noted in song and story. The Nacogdoches branch was decended, so legend says, from Charles Edward Stewart, the young pretender to the British throne, who came to the United States, married the Widow Wade in Virginia and then moved to what was in early days Mississippi Territory. He finally left that part of the country and returned to England. It was his brother, Robert Edward Stewart, or Robert Edwards, who owned the land in New York City which has interested the Edwards family many years, and on which a lease is said to have expired many years ago.
