Alton Democrat of Feb 2, 1907 Hull news.
The death of John Vande Berg which occurred at his late home at Hull last week after several weeks of
sickness came as a surprise to many. The word had just been given out the morning of the day he died that he was much belter and would soon be up and around again. The remains were laid at rest in Sioux Center.
The deceased was born in the Netherlands in 1845, He came to this country when he was about nine
teen years old living in Wisconsin for several years. He came to Sioux county in 1845 (abt 1872) settling on a quarter section four miles northeast of Sioux Center, He lived there until six years ago when he moved into Hull. By hard work and good management he had acquired a goodly share of good Sioux county soil. He has always taken active part in politics and has stood for good government.
He is survived by his wife Mrs. Vande Berg (Wilhelmina Kastein) and nine children four boys and five
girls all of whom are married and living in homes of their own except the three youngesta boy and two girls.

(Translated from Dutch by Gert Jansen)
On Jan 24, Jan Van de Berg died, after a long illness Even then it was shocking to get the message saying Jan Van de Berg is no more. He was known as a generous notable and successful man. He was readily involved in public affairs and in politics. If financial aid was needed for the church or school he was always ready to help. Many young men upon coming from the old country, have him to thank for giving them needed help. He was a gentleman of character. He also had many friends who came to him to ask his advice due to his business ability. We understand that the family has lost his powerful support, but they have his good example to follow.
Jan Van de Berg was born April 3, 1845 at Doornspijk Gelderland Nederland. At the age of 28 years he arrived in America and began working for a farmer in Wisconisn. The following hear his family also arrived in Wisconsin. Later they moved to Sioux County Iowa being among some of the early settlers to move there. On Jan 24, 1875 Jans mother died on the same day Jan died and on Jan 10, 1904 his father preceded him in death. He leaves his wife, four sons and five daughters besides three brothers and two sisters behind. May he rest in peace.
(The whole story and family descendants are laid out in the Vande Berg - Vanden Berg Book authored by Wilma J. Vande Berg in 1995. He was the son of Beert Van den Berg 1821-1904 and Aaltje Juffer 1823-1875)
