Vanaf 1764 Groot (Zijmen Willemsz Groot) genoemd, daarvoor Posthumius.
Sijmen married 1 Geertje Cornelis Hoijschip from Munckij on Jan 17 1734. Children: Willem (Oct 30 1735), Trijntje (1736), Cornelis (died March 24 1739), Geertje (April 21 1743 - June 3 1752), Cornelis (died June 20 1750, a month after his mother died). There may have been more children born between 1743 and 1749, a time period for which the Andijk baptism records are lost.
Sijmen married 2 Aafje Pieters Man on Jan 9 1752 in Andijk. Children: Pieterman (Dec 10 1752), Geertje (Nov 10 1754), Nanning (Sept 12 1756), Crelis (1759-1780), kraamkind (a child who died as it was being born; Aafje died at the same time, 1760).
Sijmen married 3 Anne Dirks Best, widow of Teunis Pietersz Mantel, on April 10 1763. With this record he is first given the last name Groot. Children: Grietje (Feb 26 - March 13 1764), Trijntje (April 20 1766).
Sometimes Sijmon is called Zijmon instead. Simon was also known as "Grote (or Groote, meaning big) Sijmens". Many records say that Simon took on the last name of Groot in 1764. However, the first instance of this in writing was on March 27 1739 in the Andijk record of the death of his son Cornelis. The Grootebroek record calls him Sijmon Willemsz, confirming that this is our Simon. He is also called Sijmons Groote in the burial records of his son Cornelis in 1750, his daughter Geertje in 1752 and his wife Aafje in 1760. And in his marriage record of 1763 he is called Sijmon Willemsz Groot, and in 1764 one of their daughter Grietje's baptism records (there were 2) called him Zijmon Willemsz Groot.
Sijmon Willemsz and Geertje Cornelis made profession of faith together in the Buurtjeskerk in Andijk on Feb 13 1735. They lived in Munnekeye at the time. Symen Willemsz in de wandeling Groote is listed in the Andijk membership record by himself with his death date Nov. 1775. "In de wandeling" literally means "in the taking a walk", probably meaning he was between things, especially wives, at that time (Aafje died that year; he probably had 4 children with him at this time). In 1775 Sijmen Willemsz appears on the membership list with his wife Anne Dirks Best. He is also called Grote Sijmen here, with his death date listed as Nov 1775 and Anne moving her membership to Grootebroek on Oct 30 1778 to be near her grandchildren. His son Willem Sijmensz buried him.
Several documents say Sijmon lived in Eenre. We aren't exactly certain what that means. It may have been the name of his piece of property in Munnikij.
Sijmon was a cattle breeder, but also apparently was the school teacher in de Buurtje for a short while, like his brother, father and grandfather. He wouldn't have been in that position for very long as he never took the title of Mr. He was known later in life as Grote Sijmen; he would have adopted this name before 1760. Before that his nickname (or surname) was Posthumius - a name he probably didn't want to keep since it means "born after daddy died", which was probably true for his grandfather but not for him.
Sijmen was assigned a voogd (guardian) for the children of Pieter Jansz, Pieter Boon & Paulus Kooiman in 1754. In 1768 Grote Sijmen sold to the deacons a pig to give to the poor. It was slaughtered by old Pieter Mantel. Most of his descendants lived in Andijk for several generations.
In their marriage contract dated April 6 1753, Sijmon and Anne agree to bring all their belongings together. This includes some land on the Vierhuizersloot close to the Kleingouw, clothes, gold and silver jewelry, furniture, money adding up to 13 guilders, 100 guilders and 150 guilders. Another 300 guilders is mentioned later in the document. It seems mostly to be about how they won't break this agreement. Sijmon's first two wives didn't make any provision for him in their wills; it seems he was determined not to let this happen a third time.
In his boedelscheiding dated March 9 1776, Pieter is mentioned with his 2nd wife Aaf and his children Willem, Ytjen (with husband Jan Krijnsz), Trijn (deceased, husband Nanne Jacobsz Buisman), Pieterman, Geertje (with husband Teunis Jacobsz Mooy), Nanne and Cornelis. A letter of Sijmon's debts was brought to the reading. It was decided not to let the debts affect the portioning of the inheritance. Willem received 3 cows, 1 yearling (young cow), 10 sheep, and 667 guilders. He paid Pieterman 437 guilders and Jan Krijnsz 229 guilders. Pieterman received the house in Munnikij, land on the Broeckersloot named de Gaase, 10 more akkers on the Broeckersloot, 11 older cows, 2 yearlings, 10 sheep, 9 pigs, several house belongings, a larger boat, 2 milk boats, a horse and wagon. He paid for the family 2023 guilders and 6 stuivers to Cornelis Sijmonsz and 860 guilders 15 stuivers to Teunis Mooy. Ytjen and Jan received land by the Kleingouw named Geertes, some furniture, and 220 guilders 18 stuivers from Willem. Geertje and Teunis received a cow, 2 sheep, 2 pigs, some furniture, and 860 guilders 18 stuivers from Pieterman for his wife's inheritance from her mother. The guardians of Tys and Geertje Nannes, children of Trijn, received for them land on the Nieuwe Dijk by the Broekersloot named Roos, more on the Broekersloot named Nieuwe Akker and 218 guilders. Pieter and Volker Best, guardians of Nanne and Cornelis, received from Pieterman 2023 guilders 6 stuivers and from their mother land on the Reijndersloot and the Enkhuizersloot named Bierlandt and 't Morgentje, 3 cows, 53 cheeses and 13 "voerkies" (voer is fodder, so maybe hay bales?). They would hand these things out as needs arose.
Groot is a pretty popular name in the Netherlands. Sijmon was the father of what is often called the Posthumius Groots; there were also the Straatsman Groots in Andijk in the early 1700's. By the 1990's, at least 17 different family trees of Groot had been living in Andijk, 15 of them including the first name of Pieter.
